When To Start OPK In Clomid Cycle?

I am on CD5, started taking 100 mg of Clomid on CD2.  I noticed more wet CM (creamy) than I normally would this early in my cycle, and I want to make sure I don't O before my u/s, which is CD11.  I normally start using OPK on CD12 and O on my own around CD17, but I just have zero idea what my body is going to do on Clomid.

Is there any reason why I should wait until I'm done with the Clomid to start using OPKs?  Sorry if this is a dumb question!

Re: When To Start OPK In Clomid Cycle?

  • My RE suggested day 12, but I am using a CBEFM, so I guess i technically started on day 6

Yes, if you read the instructions that come with the OPK, taking Clomid can give you a false positive. You need to wait 3 - 5 days after stopping CLomid before starting OPK.

If you started Clomid on CD 2, was it a 5-day treatment till CD 7? Then you should probably start OPK on CD 10.

Hm really - I didn't know that about Clomid giving false positives.  Do you know why that is?

I'm supposed to take it days 2-6 (5 days), so I guess I could start on CD9.

  • Clomid can mess with your OPK results. Chances are that you will O later than normal if anything. GL!

You think I would O later than normal on Clomid?  I thought it generally made people O earlier...

Clomid increases your production of LH and FSH, which is what the OPK is designed to "recognize". In a normal unmedicated woman, the OPK detects the "LH surge" which is then normally shortly followed by ovulation 24 - 36 hours later. Clomid artifiically raises the level early but doesn't cause ovulation, so the readings with OPK can be misleading.

  • I use the CBEFM, so I start on CD6. I haven't gotten a high or peak yet on either clomid cycle. GL to you!
  • I really hope you don't mind me responding to this. I just do not want you to miss O after taking Clomid.

I took Clomid days 3-7. My RE told me to start OPKs on cd11. Thank God I didn't!! I was getting + OPKs on cd9. The LH surge was confirmed by b/w. Had I listened to everyone (including my RE) that I would O later, I would have missed O entirely. While there is a chance you can get a false +, b/w and/or u/s can confirm. Better to get a false + than to miss the cycle entirely. GL!

Thank you - so if I'm stopping on day 6, when would you recommend I start using them - day 8 maybe?

  • I take clomid cd5-9 I tend to O really late and have super long cycles (50+days) so for me I O a lot earlier on clomid (CD16-19) I start using opks around day 11 or 12 and I haven't run into false positives, I also chart to confirm O and get my progesterone level checked.
  • CBEFM mesures LH as well as Estrogen, so that's probably why you haven't gotten a high or peak.
