Anyone been to Highfield Discovery Garden?

I tried to go there this morning w/ DS and the volunteer there actually told me that it isn't geared toward a 15 month old!  So I left and I'm a little POed about it.  My sister goes there w/ her kids (7 y.o and 4 y.o twins) and she told me that it would be fine for DS.  Just wondering what you all think...

Re: Anyone been to Highfield Discovery Garden?

  • I have never been there, but frankly I'd be irritated if a volunteer tried to interfere with my visit to a public park.  Good grief.

I know Matilda&Leon/Preemies/Denise (she has so many names!!!) went there recently with Evan.......she had pics on her FB page which were adorable.  And Evan isn't quite two yet (but almost).  I think it looks amazing for little kids.  Did the volunteer actually prevent you from getting in?  That just makes me mad!!!!!

  • Ditto Katie.  From the pics it looked like Evan had a great time.

  • I thought it looked like Evan had so much fun and now I want to take Ethan :)  Did the volunteer turn you away?  I would have been really aggravated too.

  • He didn't actually tell me that I couldn't go in, but he made me feel like a real dumba** for even thinking about taking DS in there.  One of the things he said to me was basically "If your son gets stuck in one of the climbing areas who do you think will get him out?"  Ummm...me.  I told him that I had never been there before and really just wanted to check it...I didn't know that they had things that kids could climb on, etc. and I would never let DS climb up anything by himself at this age.  Then he told me that they try to discourage kids under 3 going in there because they get in the way of the other kids.  (Kids 2 and under are free; parents have to pay $4 to get in.)  I'm just irritated by it all.  I purposefully went on a weekday and during the morning because I figured it would be less crowded and DS could take his time playing.  I did email Hamilton Co. parks about what happened.  I've also looked up the phone number for the place, but don't know yet if I'll call.

  • I think that's a bunch of crap, and I think the guy overstepped his boundaries.  Boooooo.  It looks like a lot of fun to me and I even told DH that I thought we should consider taking Justin there next week.  I'm glad you emailed the park district; make sure to let us know if you get a response!  I hope they are not lame about it.

I hope Denise sees this post and comments on her experience there.

  • we are members there and we took Ben when he was about 13 months old with no problems... It can get a bit rowdy with the bigger kids but thats how it is at every play area. He would have had a blast! I dont know why they told you otherwise... As an adult you can get to most parts of the tree house with your LO. The climbing parts he is talking about is really easy to avoid. What a dumbass
