Breastfeeding

Supplement

I know this will not go over well on this board but here goes.  I am not one of those moms who "wants" to breast feed but I do realize the importance of the health benefits it gives to the baby.  I also clearly don't have a problem with it if it works for you.  My problem is I own my own business and unfortunately will not be able to be at home nearly as long as I would like and I don't think I will have enough time to give it a fair shot.  For example best case scenario, (barring any serious problems of course) is that I will be able to be home pretty much exclusively for about 4 weeks or so...other than a few hours here or there.  After that is getting into the busy season and I will pretty much have to be back at least 2-3 days a week...he will be coming with me but pumping/bf will not really be an option while I am there.

I took the bf class at my hospital and spoke with the specialist about it briefly and she said that if nothing else the colostrum the first few days is a huge benefit and I could supplement with formula at night.   I guess my main question is if it is possible to bf during the day/ ff at night so when it is time for me to go back he will have an easier time transitioning.  I know this is a rambling mess but my mind is racing!  Thanks in advance.  Any opinions/thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Supplement

  • any breastmilk you can give is better than nothing. bf as long as you are able to and give formula onwards. i think there's a lot of pressure on women to maintain our lives PLUS breastfeed. breastfeeding is enormously demanding and requires 100% commitment if you're going to stick it out.

i've been pumping a lot and giving LO the bottle (for other reasons than yours) and i guess it's fine. just curious--why is pumping not an option for you? if you buy a really great hospital grade double pump like the medela PISA then you can pump plenty during a 15 minute coffee break several times during your workday, stash it and give it to LO later. way cheaper than formula feeding.
