I feel like I need a class on how to make the freckin thing work!
My LC wants me to supp @ the breast because DD isn't gaining any weight, and taking 40+ minutes to feed.
I'm using EBM, and I CAN'T get her to take the milk from the SNS.
With the plunger in, she doesn't seem to suck it down. With the end in a bottle, she doesn't seem to get it either!
Is there a trick to making it work? Like, it needs to be in the side of her mouth, the top, the bottom?....
I know that the two holes have to be in her mouth, but what else?
I'm about ready to break down and give her a bottle instead. It seemed so easy in the LC's office.... UGH.
TIA!
Re: Need help w the SNS.
Hi there!!
I remember sticking the tube in the corner of her mouth and trying to curve it so that I aimed for the top of her mouth. I dont know if that makes any sense. It always took many attempts before she would finally start sucking. I would take it out and try to put it back in. It was not easy to do. It was especially frustrating for the night feedings. Just keep trying.
Are you going to the feeding clinic across from SACH? Go in again and have them help you. It seemed easy when they help you, but it definitely takes several attempts. After a while you won't need to use the SNS anymore especially once your supply increases. It helped us a lot and DD has been gaining weight ver steadily since. I go to the clinic every Thursday morning.
Thanks!
I head to an LC clinic associated with my hospital that my insurance pays for, I *may* head to your feeding clinic sometime this week, just for another perspective : )
My supply is great, I have enough to pump an ounce or three AFTER each feed, but she is having to work too hard at the breast and burning all those calories. (We need to chunk her out some more!)
I am going to try the tube in the bottle way now that DH is home.
Hey Sharra! Congrats
I had DH's help when we did this and he would push the plunger gently at times. This clued baby in, and soon he started sucking it down.
As for positioning, that was always a chore! Half the time it was poking me or running down his chin. Ugh. This too shall pass!
