Breastfeeding

Rejecting the breast?

I'm back at work full time so I pump bottles during the day, then nurse at night and all weekend.  Last Saturday DD rejected the breast (after nursing 2 times earlier that day with no problem).  She was so hysterical and not willing to even try to latch that I ended up having to give her a bottle of pumped BM.

Has this happened to anyone else?  Anyone know why she would be fine for one feeding and completely rejecting me the next? (Besides the fact that she's used to the speed of the bottle and doesn't want to "work" for her food!)

Thanks!

My DS did this when I went back to work.  He did it a couple of times.  It is very stressful but eventully he went back to the breast.  Just set a time limit on how long you are going to try to get him to latch. 5 or 10 minutes depending on how upset the both of you are at that time do a bottle.  Keep trying because for us it was hit and miss.  The night and evening feedings were always the easiest for me to get him to nurse so focus on those.

  • just posted about something similar to this on 0-6. my LO nurses fine during his middle of the night feeding but is also showing signs of preferring the bottle. it sucks.

i'm going to try my best to keep putting the breast to him first, and hopefully that works.

  • It happened to me, too. Refused to nurse but took a bottle. I just took it as him being cranky, over tired, etc. He has nursed fine since then. I'm hoping it was just a one time thing.
