Prevacid question

I feel like I just read the response to this somewhere but can't find it! So anyway, those of you with LO's taking prevacid how are you giving it? The pharmacist said not to crush it just to cut it tiny and let it dissolve in DS's mouth...um, not a good idea to me! I know that as a nurse I am guilty of crushing this up to put down G-tubes all the time on our cancer patients that cannot swallow. Hmm...so do I dissolve it in some warm water and give it that way??? I'm probably going to do this tonight until I hear some responses from you ladies!!

Re: Prevacid question

  • When we were giving it to the boys by mouth we put it in a syringe with water and let it break up and then a little at a time squirt it into their mouths.  We go slow so they don't gag on the granules.  Now that the boys are on G tubes we do the same but just put it through the tube instead of the mouth.

     HTH!

  • We cut a slit in a nipple, put a little warm water in the nipple, drop in the tablet, put it in his mouth and as he sucks on it we squirt a little water in from behind the nipple to rinse it all down. We tried a bunch of different ways and that was the only one that worked for us and kept him from spitting it out. We tried different syringes but it seemed to stick to the syringe too much.

  • I knew it would stick to the syringe and that is exactly what happened tonight! I ended up putting the granuals on my finger tip and letting him suck on my finger...that is finally how I got it in him. Hopefully better luck tomorrow night. I did talk to my mom's friend, who is a pharmacy tech, and she thinks they might be able to make the med into a compound but isn't sure. Don't know if that would be any better but we'll see. Also, how ridiculous is the price of this stuff!? We ended up paying our "top tier" or max amount of $45 for it. At least we have insurance, but it's still another dent in the wallet. The sooner we switch to a cheaper formula the better.

  • it can be compounded, but you don't want it that way The suspension is highly volatile and breaks down very quickly, so you end up with 2 weeks of meds and 2 weeks of nothing.
The other thing is that it's compounded with sodium bicarb so it tastes like crap and the babies *HATE* it.
The solutabs work MUCH better and taste good.

We always used a syringe. I would get a 10ml syringe, put the tab in, add about 4ml of water, then shake like hell. Then I woudl turn the syringe tip down and shake the granules down to the very tip so that the granules come out first, followed by the water.
Then add another 3 ml of water to it, do the same thing (to get the remaining granules) and do it again.
Not the prettiest method, but it works.

As for the price.. it sucks. OOP it's like 140 bucks. We had an insurance issue one month and had to pay for it. It sucked.

Of course, now Robbie's on Nexium and it's 220/month. (Thank God we got the insurance situation fixed.)

  • The best way I have found is to get a glass of water and a bottle ready. I dip the tab in the water for just a second and stick it in her mouth. Then IMMEDIATLY stick the nipple of the bottle in and she gobbles it down. I usually only lose a few granules out of the side of her mouth. Good luck!

  • I do it the same way TriciaJoy did.  We lose very little medication this way and Reese just sucks on the syringe like its a bottle.

  • also- not sure if they still do it, but if you check the prevacid website, they used to have a card where you could get 25 bucks off every month.

  • Thanks for the continued responses. Not sure if this was a correct way to do it, but DS gets mylicon prior to every bottle still right now (still gassy from the formula). So...we dissolved the prevacid in a little bit of hot water then added our mylicon dose to it and were able to suck it up in that syringe no prob and quickly squirt it in his mouth. He takes the mylicon really well so he swallowed it right now. What was left we sort of dripped into his mouth and he took that well too. Whatever works, right?? Thanks for the tip on the website!

  • how early are you giving the dose? You do want to give the prevacid on an empty stomach, so that's the only consideration. Otherwise, that sounds like a fine method to me.
