Hey, I need advice on how many cloth diapers to get and liners... Can you help me? LOL I am so lost in this area and the preggo brain is not helping! I haven't found a suggested amount, but I did find that people buy several different brands of them. I also have 4 -40 packs of newborn diapers... which I could always return.. but that is an extra trip lol.
Re: *Peachy*
No problem!
You'll want about 24 diapers. Newborns use about 12/day, and you want a 2-3 day supply. I rented 24 Kissaluv size 0 fitted diapers from Nell's. It's waaaay cheaper than buying new (or used, typically). I was happy with the rental and the diapers. KL0s are super easy to use, fold down for the umbilical stump, and are absorbent enough for newborns. We also had 12 prefolds. Mine are some anonymous brand from Milagros in NE, and Cloth-eez are supposedly the best (I'm prepping some that I just bought right now, so I'll be able to tell you). Prefolds are the most economical way to CD. They are also an excellent thing to have on hand, whether or not you are CDing, because the are so gosh-darn handy. I use the on the changing table and for nursing/burping, and diaper-free time... So actually, they were hardly used as diapers until DD outgrew the KL0s and we didn't have anything else on hand. We also had one XS Thirties AIO that I didn't like at all.
With fitted and prefold diapers, you'll also need covers. I suggest having 4. Bummis and Thirties are both good. Newborn size Bummis fit lil' newborns perfectly, but they are outgrown quickly. XS Thirsties are pretty big on newborns (but still work), but they fit longer. You can also use wool covers, but they are more expensive, so I'd avoid since they will be outgrown so quickly.
With prefolds, you'll need snappis. They are awesome! You really only need one, but get two since they are cheap and easily misplaced.
That's a good newborn stash. It will work until LO is about ~10 lb (~12 lb for prefolds). Then you can build a "real" stash. Some people do all one-size diapers (like pockets), so that they pay more upfront but are done buying. Or, you can continue buying size by size. We are primarily doing prefolds, although we have two BG OS AIOs that seem good so far and may get some high-quality, absorbent OS fiiteds for night time.
You'll also want a washable pail liner. I have one by Swddlebees, but all brands are essentially the same. Also - you do NOT need some fancy, expensive diaper pail. Just get a large, plastic flip-top from Fred Meyers or Target.
You'll want a wetbag for your diaper bag. I have a whamies one, and I hear good things about Leslie's Boutique. I keep a small wetbag and disposable diapers in the diaper bag, so id DD needs a diaper change I can store the CD she left home in but don't have to worry about stocking the bag with CDs before we go out. Sometimes it would be nice to have a medium for longer trips, but we just put her in disposables. If your DS will be in CDs at daycare, you'll want a large wetbag to hold your diapers.
You also need a CD-friendly detergent, which is by far the most confusing. Look at this and this. I use Planet (form Fred Meyer) and don't seem to have any problem. Crunchy Clean is popular on the EFF board, but I prefer something I can buy in store.
That's all you need. Some people use cloth wipes, too. You don't need a sprayer or flushable liners for EBF poop; It's water-soluble, so the whole messy diaper just goes in the pail. I don't know about formula-fed.
There are local stores that sell CD supplies, like Milagros, Mother Nature's, and Babyworks. There are lots of online retailers, like Jillian's Drawers, Modern Diapers, and Cotton Babies.
Also. I have collected a ton of info in my bio, although it's a tad out of date.
Oh - and keep the disposibles. They come in handy for long trips away from home and the first few days at home after birth. Also, I think they are popular for after a circumcision, although obviously I don't have firsthand experience since we had a girl.
