Breastfeeding

when to say when...

My LO can't seem to tell when to stop. Either that or I just don't get her cues. It seems like she would eat and eat and eat if I let her. However, the problem is that when she spits up ( I know that is usually the cue to stop) she still acts hungry. She was recently diagnosed with reflux so we are trying to figure that out. I can't seem to tell when it is the reflux or she spits up because she is actually full. Also she seems to eat all the time, so I have a hard time figuring out how long it is actually between feedings and such. You would think after almost 2 months I would be better at this Sad

Sometimes a pacifier works, but it if falls out she usually starts screaming again. Am I the only one? If your LO has reflux, do you get other cues that they are done, or do you just stop after a certain point?

Re: when to say when...

  • We didn't have reflux issues, but I do remember reading that if a baby is uncomfortable, tired, etc. they will continue to eat b/c they don't know how else to help themselves.  Do you notice her sucking slow down?  Can you feel a letdown sensation at all?  I bet the reflux has a lot to do with her continuing to feed beyond hunger, but I'm no help there.

  • Breastmilk has pain-relieving properties, so it can soothe the throat of a baby with reflux. Once they spit up, the pain comes back, and they want to be soothed more. It's a vicious cycle. Are you getting your LO on meds for it? That should help some.
