Breastfeeding

EPers How soon after delivery did you start?

I am having a dilemma, I don't know if I want to EBF or EP or both. I have two older kids that takes a lot of my time and is so excited about the baby coming. If I pump they can help feed her, but I guess I am concerned about my supply and wonder if I should take the pump with me to the hospital. TIA

Re: EPers How soon after delivery did you start?

  • I started the day we left the hospital (so when she was 2 days old). I would have started sooner, but the LC wasn't available the night I had her (it was past the LC hrs.) & I mostly kept her on the breast. In the beginning I'd think BF rather than pumping is a good idea while you're waiting for your milk to come in... the baby's sucking is stronger & helps stimulate the breasts better, plus if you pump & are hardly getting anything (just colostrum in beginning) that's so little & then having to wash parts, etc. I tried not to pump often until my milk came in... that's just me though. Do what you think will work for you, your family & your schedule with having 2 older kids too. And definitely pump though (once your milk is in) & give them the opportunity to help with feedings. I keep about 6 oz. of breast milk in fridge at any given time so DH or family/guests can give DD a bottle sometimes.

  • Our baby had some latching issue because of my inverted nipples so the nurses had me pumping every 3 hrs and feeding daughter with an sns system (formula fed through a tube you tape to your breast) while in the hospital. I did this for 2 days in the hospirtal and 3 days at home and after 2 sessions with a lc to try and get things to work, i decided to ep after about 5 days as baby was losing weight and i really did not want to feed formula.

the hospital i was had the pumps there and gave me the parts.

  • I started two days after LO was born.   He was in the NICU and on a feeding tube.  He is, however, able to BF, its just that pumping has become second nature for me and I find it more convenient to pump.  I know that its actually more convenient to BF, but for some reason I cant wrap my head around it.
