EBF and Working out ?

I EBF and want to start working out more next week.  I am worried it will affect my supply though.  Has this happened to anyone?  I don't plan to do anything crazy - just about 20 minutes of elliptical and 20 minutes of abs/weight lifting (so 40 minutes total workout) 2x a week in addition to a Pilates class (already started this) once a week.  I really hope it doesn't make my supply dip, so please let me know if you saw this.  TIA!

Re: EBF and Working out ?

  • I have avoided going to the gym all this time because I was afraid of my supply dipping.

It did happen to my friend, but she was able to get it back up eventually...Make sure you're drinking lots of water and of course, stop if it becomes too much. Also, maybe try taking Fenugreek/ drinking the Mother's Milk tea to help with your supply.

  • My supply dipped substantially. I would stick to something simple, like 1 exercise video (20-30 min) 3-5 times per week. Of course, everyone is different, so you might not have that problem. BF is so precarious - you have to make sure you're still taking in the right amount of calories, so exercising burning calories would mean you'd have to eat/drink A TON.
  • For me, it's not necessarily correlated to working out, but with weight loss.  I've I drop below a certain weight, my supply really tanks.   If I keep up my calorie level, drink enough water and wear a supportive bra, I'm fine.

  • OK, thanks ladies, I'm going to be watching my supply like a hawk once I start this.  The reply about weight and supply dipping is interesting to me because I got to about 3 pounds within what I was upon getting pregnant and my weight loss stopped.  I don't eat all that great though and I know I take in PLENTY of calories (eating not so great leads to this) so I'm curious to see if my body still wants to hold on to these last 10 pounds while nursing.  My MIL said her body always held on to an extra 10 until she stopped, and that's what mine seems to be doing.  (I got pregnant while weighing about 8 pounds more than usual and am now within 3 pounds of that, hence my wanting to lose these 10lbs. so that I am back to my "usual" pre preg weight.)
