Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

Amelia is getting tubes :(

Ear infection #7 this morning.

The surgery scheduler will be calling me later. I am so sad and worried, even though I know I shouldn't be.

My family has a history of bad reactions to Anethesia, so you can please pray for my little baby to be ok?

It doesn't help that I am already overly emotional about her turning 1. I have cried like 8 times in the last few days... and I still have almost a month to go. Sheez.

Re: Amelia is getting tubes :(

  • Gosh, these poor babies! I have no personal experience with this, but from what I have heard, it makes a world of difference.  GL to you and Miss A. She'll be just fine, probably harder on Mama.

  • We got tubes after Ella Claire's 5th infection in three months as she quit responding to antibiotics. The tubes have been great. She now talks and can hear what you say, it's wonderful. Our only downside has been that she falls in the less than 2% of kids who can feel them, we think. She is constantly batting and hitting her ears, like she feels something in there. Our doc said she should get used to it with time.
  • I"m sorry - it is rough to get to the tube point, but it has been an improvement for us.  You might ask your ENT - the anesthesia they used on DD was very light and not the regular general anesthesia.  Much better to know that, but still has reactions associated with it, just not as bad.  We still get ear infections with tubes from time to time, but nothing near as bad - and DD always got lots of fun side effects from antibiotics too so I have been glad those are not as frequent.  Good luck.
  • I will definatly keep you and sweet Amelia in my prayers. I know how it is to have a little one go under. And like pp said, I'm pretty sure they use a light anethesia, but I would ask. When Colton had his surgery at Cooks, they had 90-100 surgeries scheduled that day with only 3 (we were one) that we're staying the night. Everyone else was pretty much an ENT type of surgery. We meet this couple that had a little girl (4 months older than Colton) in the playroom while we were waiting for them to call him for his surgery. Anyway, she was having tubes put in but it was amazing to me because she was in and out of surgery/recovery and out the door sitting up in her stroller taking a bottle in less than an hour. I couldn't believe how fast she in and out and she did so great.
Anyway, point being I know it's scary for you, but it'll help her out so much and she'll be back home playing in no time. Good Luck and keep us posted!
  • I'm so sorry hon, although i am thinking this might be better in the long run. GL and ::hugs::
  • I'm sorry, that's definitely scary I am sure, but probably the best thing for her in order to correct the problem. Sending prayers your way that there are no problems with the Anethesia and that everything goes perfectly and better than you could have ever expected!
  • I'm so sorry hon ... but from everything I've heard they make SUCH a difference and Amelia will be SO much happier in the long run.  Keep us posted on her surgery date!

    You know what.....

Thank you so much for posting. You and Colton have been through SO MUCH and it really puts the tubes in perspective. You are so strong... I would seriously be a basketcase if she had to have serious surgery.

I am still worried, but I will keep your story in my head so that I know she will be ok.

  • Getting the tubes was the best thing we ever did for Lilly. They removed the pain, pressure, and improved her hearing/speech. The surgery was under 5mins. From the time they took her to the surgery room and returned her to recovery, it was exactly 10 mins! After reading my EOB and doing the math, it made me want to rethink my career!! Wink

    All will be well!

  • Awww man :( That's a bummer. Poor A. I'm sure it will be fine, but I don't blame you for worrying.

Exactly how Emma's surgery went. She had hers done in April and what a difference it has made! She's had two minor colds since (actually has one right now) and she's no where near as miserable as she would have been prior to the tubes. Every cold would result in fluid build up and pain and then antibiotics for ear infections. It's the best thing we could have done for her.

    Hang in there, momma!

  • I have heard from so many people how wonderful life was for their child after tubes. I am sure you have nothing to worry about. Poor little Amelia and her ears. I have only had 1 ear infection my whole life and it hurt like hell. This will be wonderful for her. ::HUGS::
  • Prayers for Amelia and the anethesia.  I am positive it will make everything better for her but I know it's still scary.
  • I know it's so scary but you will be so glad you did it. Cameron got tubes the week after he turned one and I'm not exaggerating he was happier immediately after because they got rid of all the fluid that had been there forever. We used Dr. Biaviatti at ENT Care for Kids in Plano and the whole experience was very good. My pedi and her partner doctor both used him for all their kids.?
