Breastfeeding

IM so lost ...

Im going to be BF (hopefully) and feel so lost. Im taking a BF class on August 10, but want to read up on it now, in case I go early.

I just have so many questions, like if you are BF baby (at home for maternity for 12 weeks), do you pump too?

The list is endless ...

Can anyone suggest good books or websites?

Re: IM so lost ...

  • A good book to start with would be "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding".  It's put out by Le Leche League and is actually pretty helpful.  I have it sitting on my coffee table as a quick reference for when I have questions.

Websites:  Le Leche League International (www.lli.org) has lots of info (and you may want to go to a meeting before you give birth-I went and the ladies were really informative and it was nice to just be around other mothers)

www.kellymom.com also has a lot of info (although by my post above you can see that I'm not really sure where the info comes from or how "accurate" it is)

It's really not as complicated as it seems though so just relax and remember that BFing is something you are made to do-you can do it!  :)  Good luck!

  • Just try and relax, honestly everything will come naturally.  I was really worried at first and felt like I wouldn't know what to do, but when DD was born my instincts kicked in and everything was natural.  www.kellymom.com is a really good website, I've found a lot of good information there and refer back to it everytime I have a question about something.  Also, there was a lactation consultant in the hospital that came to my room several times to help me and answer any questions I had.  I don't know if they have anything like this where you are planning on delivering but that can be very helpful as well.
  • It's funny because I was the exact opposite when I was pg.  I thought it would just come naturally and barely read about it before DS was born.  It was harder than I thought and I definitely recommend getting a Lactation Consultant to give you some tips while still at the hospital, if it's provided.   LC really helped me with positioning and latching on and it helped that she was "hands on" literally :)  I would also recommend kellymom.com it has a lot of helpful info for all kinds of situations.  For me, the first 2 weeks were the hardest for me because of the pain and getting used to everything but since then breastfeeding has been great.  Best wishes and congratulations!
