Houston Babies

I think you have a mei tei and a moby (amongst other carriers) and was wanting to get your opinion.  I have a BabyHawk Mei Tei that I bought late in the first year with Owen, and I was planning on using this and my pouch sling with the new baby.  Do you think a Moby and Mei Tei end up functioning pretty similarly, or do you think I should consider getting a Moby, especially for the newborn time period?  I envision needing to wear this one a lot more with having another one to chase.  I appreciate your help!

  • I don't think you'd regret getting a Moby, let me put it that way.  I have a pouch sling and my problem with them and a newborn is that unless you're the model they used to design their sizing, I think it's really hard to get a close comfortable hold in one.  But, I'm the opposite body type of what they were designed for and just have never been able to get a proper fit on one.  I do have one now that I'm trying to modify to fit me so that I can carry Marion in a hip carry with it and I still haven't gotten a great fit.

A few of the other moms in my playgroup have used their mei teis with teeny tiny ones and it works for them, but I just can't imagine it being quite as comfortable for a newborn as the Moby is with all of its stretch.

Mobys are towards the bottom of the price range when it comes to carriers, so it's not a huge investment which is always nice.  Plus, with your baby coming in the "winter" here, I found the Moby was great because I never had to worry about keeping her warm enough.  I could go around in short sleeves inside and it kept me warm too.

The Moby just saved our sanity on a daily basis, I can't imagine the newborn period without one :)

I made my wrap for $5 with cotton jersey on clearance. No sewing required. I just bought 5 yards and cut in half lengthwise. Not as pretty as a moby, but a cheap way to try it out. Instructions I used:  https://wearyourbaby.com/Default.aspx?tabid=121

After that I used a ring sling and evetually a mei tai. Like kat, I don't think I have the body type to wear a pouch sling, plus DD hated to lay down and had to be held upright.

  • Thanks, ladies.  I went back and forth between liking and not liking the pouch sling last time around (and sometimes used the Baby Bjorn Active - which I now know is a no-no in the babywearing world), so I've thought about getting a ring sling... but I've also heard such good things about a wrap and newborns.  I would like to try to keep it down to one new carrier, though.
  • If you're already comfortable wearing the mei tai and using that, then I think that there's no need for the ring sling.  The ring is a little quicker to get off and on, but you won't need that when your new baby is little.

Plus with the Moby, since the baby will be here during the colder months, you can put your coat on over it without taking it off, like you would have to do with the ring sling, so that's just kind of an extra nice feature.

  • Ok, I'm sold - thanks!! :)
