Nutramigen Users- HELP!

DD was originally on similac advance, was extremely fussy and gassy, so we made the switch to similac sensative and the problem seems to get worse. She is screaming through all of her bottles and for an hour afterwards. My pedi had said awhile ago that one of the options would be Nutramigen and that it seems to be effective for these symptoms. I was just wondering if you use this, why you switched and if you saw a difference right away? I feel horrible that she is crying and appears in so much pain and dont know what to do!

Re: Nutramigen Users- HELP!

  • Owen is MSPI and it took a lot of trial and error to figure it out. I EBF and modified my diet completely. After supply issues I had to start formula. My LO is so intolerant that he could not take Alimentum or Nutramigen we had to move to Neocate. I will try to find a post that describes my LO's issues and I will post the link for ya.

  • I couldn't find a detailed post so I will copy and paste part of what I typed up for our Pedi GI.

    Symptoms:

    1.     projectile vomiting

    2.    decreased feedings .5oz-2oz vs 3oz-4.5oz

    3.    wet hiccups

    4.    congested

    5.    arched back while eating

    6.    kicking legs during and after feedings

    7.    clawing

    8.    constantly pulling away from the breast

    9.    screaming in sleep

    10.  poor sleep/ wakes up every 1.5-2 hours

    11.  body crunches together/ constantly showing signs of discomfort

    12.  gassy

    13.  irritable

    14.  diaper rash that won?t go away

    15.  minor cradle cap

    16.  rash on the back of his neck that won?t go away

    17.  constipation

What we have tried that didn?t work:

    1.     Zantac @ .8ml 3x a day

    2.    Prevacid: Starting at day four, Owen would scream for many hours after getting the medicine. Day seven, the screaming increased to all night. On day eight the screaming continued. We stopped the medicine and he got better each night. * The screaming would decrease if we held him with pressure on his belly.

    3.    Nutramigen: He screamed every time a bottle with this came near him. It was mixed 1oz Nutramigen to 3oz of breast milk.

    4.    Cereal in bottles

    5.    Variety of bottles-  Dr. Browns. NUK, Born Free, Breastflow

    6.    Cutting out dairy alone- Starting at 5 weeks.

    7.    Cutting out wheat showed no results.

    8.    Cutting out nuts showed no results.

    What is questionable?

    1.     Alimentum: Owen would only take small amounts while he was awake. I gave him bottles mixed with 1 part Alimentum to 3 parts breast milk for a day. The projectile vomiting came back. I stopped trying to give him this for two days. I tried giving him a bottle with only Alimentum while he was sleeping. He took a 3oz bottle. After this, every bowel movement had mucus stool that was reddish brown in color for the next two days.

    What has shown improvements?

    1.     Removing dairy from my diet has shown major improvements. This includes almost all hidden dairy. The only things that have small amounts of dairy are wheat bread on occasion and wheat tortillas.

    2.    Removing soy protein from my diet. We had a very rough spot 2 weeks ago. I had trialed small amounts of soy, but didn?t see any major correlation to how Owen was feeling. I assumed that it was ok. After drinking a large amount of soy milk over two days, Owen became very sick. * This is when we decided to try to give him formula until my system cleared.

    3.    Zantac @ 1ml given 3x a day. Now this is becoming less effective. It was the dose given at 11lbs 6oz.

  • My LO has been on 5 different formulas since 5 days old.  We are currently on Nutramigen and re-lactating to give breast milk (only up to about 2.5 ounces a day so far).  I have had to cut all dairy and caffeine out of my system for the breast milk.  The previous post are the exact symptoms she had but the doctor just said it was severe colic and to switch formulas again.  So far we have been on the nutramigen for 1 week and she seems to be feeling better, a lot happier.  It took her about 3-4 days before she started to eat better and show signs of the colic going away.  But this happened with the other formulas too.  We were on the Enfamil with Lipil for a week before symptoms showed up, then moved the the Enfamil Gentlease for 2 weeks then symptoms.  Moved to Similac Isomil (soy) for 3 weeks and then symptoms.  Then similac sensitive for 4 days and symptoms with severe constipations.  Finally the Nutramigen for 1 week so far and no symptoms at this time.  I am hoping it stays this way but plan to keep trying to relactate to give more breast milk than formula.  If this does not work, I plan to ask to be referred to a pedi GI specialist.  Hope some of this information is helpful.
