Intimidated by solids! Help please!

DS is soooo ready to eat solids.  He's been showing signs for a couple weeks now.  Before I knew better or I guess learned differently, I was just going to do Gerber jar food.  Then I decided I'd make my own and now I'm leaning towards baby led weaning like ncbelle is doing.  I really like what I've researched so far, but I'm still freaking out about it.  DS has had allergic reactions to things I've eaten so I've been on the elimination diet adding back wheat and eggs so far.  So, I'm nervous about that side of it.  And even though BLW shows less chance of choking, I'm freaked out about that as well.  I have no idea what I'd do.  BFing has been so easy.  I know he needs solids though, I know he's ready.  Anyone have any tips to help make it easier on a worried mommy?  I was hoping to start this weekend and Saturday is already gone.  Do I just do dinner and one food like avacado for 4 nights and start with a new item like carrots or bananas for another 4 nights?
Thanks so much!

  • We started with just one food at a time. I think we tried avocado first (did not go over well!)... and moved on to sweet potatoes which she LOVED. They cook up & mash easy, so no need for equipment.

Oh - we did do oatmeal for a while as well (the baby flakes stuff).

    Definitely look at that site.

I made all of DD's food.  Super easy.  (Except apples.  It's so easy and cheap to get organic apples.  Not worth the effort.)

We did yams first.  Then rice cereal.  Then just slowly kept adding things from there. Avocado was  a huge failure here, too.  DD was SO insulted by them.  Really revolted.  I thought "Hey, I like guacamole, how bad can it be?"  I tried some of the mashed fruit, gagged, then apologized profusely to DD, then pitched the rest.  ;)

  • I'm not sure about the allergy issue, but I can tell you what we did.

We have made all our own food, started solids at 6.5 months, and here is the progression - each for about 4 days, just 1 meal a day.

avocado (liked, but caused a middle-of-the night poop explosion on day 3 so we took a 3-day break from solids)
    banana
    sweet potato
    peas (he didn't like)
    rice cereal
    applesauce
    butternut squash.

It's so easy to  make food!  And I've been using wholesomebabyfood.com as well.

  • I answered you on 6-12 but to add to that...

The thing I like most about BLW is that it takes some of the guess work out of it - he gets to decide how much is the right amount to eat.  It's also a more gradual transition since he really is just learning how to handle food now instead of eating a ton (so he still nurses the same).  I was worried about choking a bit but honestly he only gagged a bit the first few times (and heck, I gagged on my dinner last night and I've been eating for 30 years!).  Solids should be about learning to enjoy food and not stressing over getting baby to eat - so do whatever method helps you feel the most relaxed.

Since he's had some possible allergies, I'd just take it slow.  Do one food at a time and give him a few days on that food.  If you decide to go with BLW, you can try giving him that food in different shapes to mix it up a bit - like banana chunks, banana discs, banana sticks, etc.   Or roasted sweet potato, steamed sweet potato.
