My newborn does not respond to loud noises..WORRIED!

My DS is a week and 4 days old. He passed his hearing test in the hospital with flying colors, however, he has us a little concerned. He is not in the least bit startled by loud noises. He will lightly flinch his eyes and legs, but he seems unphased by it otherwise. We have tried EVERYTHING. He doesn't cry or even get remotely bent out of shape with loud noises. In addition, he does not follow my voice when I call him. He hears me call his name, but he doesn't seem to search for me when I do. He will look all over the place, but will not focus on me. I am stressing that something is wrong with him. Have any of you gone through something similar?

i can't remember exactly how long it takes, but i'm pretty sure he is too young.  ds never cried at noises.  and, it takes them a few month to follow noises and focus on anything.

    TOTALLY normal for so young!

DS did not start to get scared until 4 months or so. Now everything startles him!!

Was he exposed to loud noises a lot in the womb? We have crazy barking dogs, and I am a loud yeller (haha) so I chalk up my baby's lack of response to her just being used to it.

My DS just jumps a little. He doesn't cry or seem phased by loud noises and he doesn't jump all of the time.

DD wasn't startled by noises that young either; and he's too young to focus on anything, including your voice.

Stop trying to scare the poor child, it is perfectly normal! Enjoy things like vacuuming and the dogs barking no because you will miss those days when loud noises do being to startle him.

I ran a vacuum around L since she was born with no crying response - and your LO is way too young to respond to your voice or look for you. He really cant even see that well yet!

    calm down.

Enjoy it while it lasts!  I too thought there was a problem when she was that young. NOTHING startled her. Then one day during a feeding, my FI clapped because the Red Socks hit a home run, and the poor thing shook and cried.  I knew she was just fine.  Now we try to not be too too loud when she sleeps. But she does have a baby crack machine.  I think she is just so much more curious and aware now!

If he flinches, he's responding to loud noises. They dont' have to get bent out of shape or cry. In fact, it's great that he doesn't! He's got a good disposition :) As for looking for you when he hears your voice, it's a little early for that, so don't worry. I'm sure he's fine--it's totally natural to worry, but he sounds perfectly on track and normal to me. If you're still concerned, bring it up at his 2mo appt.

enjoy it while it lasts.. DD was like that until about 2.5 months. Now she gets startled and gets that pouty (yet cute) cry. My MIL set the house alarm off one morning by accident and wow did DD cry.

This sounds normal.  DD just started following voices in the last week or so and isn't phased by loud noises yet.
