Bpaullo and other metformin users

Did ya'll take met during your pregnancy?  I'm just curious.

I took the full dose for the first 12 weeks, and now i'm down to half a dose for throughout my pregnancy.  Dr feels that it will decrease the chance of developing GD later on.  I had to drop to only 2 pills (1000mg) because I was losing weight still on the full dose.

  • I took metformin throughout my pregnancy, the doctor also decreased my usual dose by half.  And I did not develop GD.

I stopped taking it at about 12 weeks....  I'm back on it now.  I'm goibg to try only 1,000 mg/day and see how it works.  I used to take 1,500 mg....  I failed my 1 hour test  twice with Lila and close on the 3 hour...  I probably should have been on it...  I'm hoping the met will help me lose the baby weight and get my energy back...  I've been a mess...

  • My dr has me on the full dose (2000mg) until wk 14 and she wants to start gradually dropping 500mg. I don't want to discontinue it completely, though, and she does... she and I still need to work that part out.
  • My Dr. has me on it through 12 weeks and then I will quit cold turkey. I think we are going to do my GD tests earlier than normal to see how things go.

I really don't want to have GD. With all the nausea I haven't really been keeping to my diet. Vegetables make me feel ill. I am trying to get back on track this week.

  • I stayed on the full dosage for the whole pregnancy.  However I learned the hard way that you should not take Metformin while breastfeeding.  We did not know, and apparently it's not commonly known that babies can be affected sevearly by this medicine.

Elysabeth spent a week in the NICU at 4 days old because she was hypoglycemic.   After extensive testing about everything under the sun that could have caused it and research by the neonatologist and my husband we came to the conclusion that the only thing that could have caused it was my meds.  I had to throw away probably 30 bm feedings and get off the meds.

In short...it's ok to take while preggers (it does help prevent gd) but should be stopped the week prior to your dd.  If you wanna temper it off I guess you could start to wean during your last month of pregnancy.

What was your full dose? 2000mg?  And at what week did you have your DD?

Dr told me that I would stop it once I deliver, but I may just stop it once a few days prior to knowing when I'll deliver or as I get closer to the due date.

  • I stopped cold turkey at 12 weeks. However, now doing some research I probably should have stayed on it my entire pregnancy. I didn't have GD and wasn't even close but I've researched that it could have helped my milk production if I had stayed on it. Unfortunately my milk has now dried up and we are exclusively formula feeding. I wanted so much to BF... but now I know for next time.
