3rd Trimester

Teachers should not have to do this, right?

Yesterday I was in the women's bathroom at target. In the stall next to me was a mom and a daughter. The mom said to the daughter, "Maddie, I am kind of worried about your starting kindergarten. If you have to poop at school, tell your teacher you need help wiping." Is it just me or should teachers not have to help wipe their students?

  • FTS, hell no!!!  I remember a few years ago, a little boy was actually still in diapers in Kinder.  The parent thought it was MY job to potty train him.  Um, NO!

  • No. In Georgia, you're not even legally allowed to wipe or have contact with feces of children that are 3 or older.
  • Wow! I really can't believe how stupid & clueless people can be sometimes! I would NEVER expect my child's teacher to wipe her bum.

Oh, this drives me nuts.  I work as a preschool assistant in the three-year-old room and the rule is that the child MUST be potty-trained and three to come to school.  I can't tell you how many parents say the child is potty trained and then send them in diapers and LEAVE, so that the poor kid is sitting in their own urine or feces.  We legally cannot wipe them, so we have to instruct them to take off the diaper/training pants and try to coax them to use the potty and clean themselves.  While twelve other three-year-olds are going nuts in the other room.

  • Teachers can't wipe a student.  Unless the child is in some type of extra assistance/special education school, the teacher has to call in the nurse, etc. for assistance if there is an accident.

I teach 1st grade now but I've taught 3 year olds and I remember those days! Parents seemed shocked when you make their child wipe themselves-- in spite of knowing that they were supposed to be potty trained to enter the class anyway!

  • ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!  I taught K for 8 years and never wiped a bottom.  If they have a problem I would've sent them to the nurse and talked to this flake (I mean parent) about getting their child school ready!  Unbelievable!
  • Oh hell no!  That gets filed under the heading, "Not My Job".

I teach in a small PK-2 school.  We had an issue this year with a parent of a 4 year old.  Apparently the child came home from school not very well cleaned after a bowel movement.  Now, keep in mind this kid was not special needs.  The mom FLIPPED OUT about why didn't the teachers check him to make sure he was clean.  Ummmm.....I'm sorry, teaching your child to wipe themselves after they poo if the PARENT'S JOB!

  • Holy crap! That is not only wrong, but disgusting! Eeeek!
  • In most states I am pretty sure that is against the law.  I worked with a special needs child and had to be trained to assist him and there was paperwork documenting that I was trained and allowed to do so.  I thought kids were not allowed into Grade School unless they were potty trained.
  • WHAT!!!!!!!!! wow. by kindergarten shouldn't kids be able to wipe their own a$$??? Maybe mommy should practice with her daughter at home if it is an issue. NOT the teachers responsibility!!
  • If they haven't mastered wiping yet, maybe she is not ready for kindergarten.

  • No, they should not have to do that.

That being said, I remember a boy in my kindergarten class that did need help.

How on earth would this work for a child with a severe handicap that is unable to toilet themselves? There is no way you can make a law like that.

  • No, I wouldn't wipe a child who was in a class that required them to be potty trained. Unless it was specifically written in an IEP or a note from a doctor that said it was needed. It's a HUGE liability... If the parents are worried about it, they can give the child a bath when they get home. Or even bring flushable wipes to school.
  • We're definitely not allowed to do that.

Sorry- this is in regular ed classes. I've not worked with special needs kids or in special ed classes. I am sure accomodations are made in those cases! I just remember this being a part of my training when I did work in 3 yr old classrooms.
