I'm having a pumping problem. I started pumping one side in the AM a few weeks ago just to "even things out". I seem to have quite a bit of milk, so DD rarely ever nurses both sides well. I also have an issue with forceful let-down. My issue - I feel I am creating an oversupply problem by pumping - thus making the let down issue worse not better...but I like to pump a bit off when I'm really full so DD doesn't drown/choke on the milk (when this happens she won't re-latch on that side). Any suggestions on how to regulate things? (Its also gotten worse recently becuase she's been sleeping 11-4:30 at night)
I also feel like I need to pump the non-nursed side in the AM in order to avoid potential duct issues. I'm a SAHM so I nurse almost 100% of the time and currently have a huge stash which will probably be wasted
so thats not an issue. Thanks for any input.
Re: over supply/pumping?
I refer to the Kellymom website for all BFing issues: https://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html. Good luck mama!
I had the exact same problem. For the let down, I would keep a burp cloth handy when we nursed and right as I would start to let dowm. I would remove her and let the milk go onto the burp cloth until it stopped flowing or until she started to get upset that I had taken her off. That helped with the choking.
I ended up with mastitis from the over supply. I had to pump myself empty to help with the infection which led to more of an over supply. I was pumping in the morning and right before I went to bed. To wean myself off the pump I stopped pumping myself empty. I would shorten the amount of time I pumped at each session. I would pump a little, just enough to be comfortable and not over full. My supply finally regulated and I could stop pumping. It took about a month and a half.
I now have a huge freezer stash that I haven't really touched since I SAH. I actually did have to dip into it when DD was around 11 months since I was having a little bit of supply issues. It was nice to have that as a back up.
Good luck!
