how many feedings/ day for 2 month old?

Hi all! hoping the gods don't reign hell on me for this but...

my little guy has been sleeping like crazy. last feeding is at 8 pm. he fusses a little and we feed at three or four am. during the day, he can go between two hours or four hours between feeds, with very few clusters.

today, it was seven feeds in a 24 hour period. with three or four excellent poops and many many many wet diapers. still seems to be gaining well, but not as fast as in the first six weeks. sometimes he's def. satisfied, but sometimes it takes me a little while to figure out if he's hungry, wet, tired, etc.

is this enough? should we still be doing 8-12 feeds/ day? TIA!

Re: how many feedings/ day for 2 month old?

  • DD started sttn at 10 weeks (9pm-7am).  (Before anyone says how lucky I am, she stopped at 4 months and doesn't sttn at 3 years.)

Anyway, she was nursing about every 2 hours during the day.  Before she started sttn, she was waking once.  I guess that's about 8x a day and 0-1x a night.

7x a day is probably enough as long as he's having plenty of wet or dirty diapers.

  • Our pediatrician said from day one that as long as he's getting 6 good feeds in during the day and he's gaining weight correctly to let him sleep and eat on demand.  We're still up every 2-3 hours at night though even though he's getting 7-8 feeds in during the day (7 am-11 pm).
  • It sounds to me like you have a dream child Smile  I think it sounds like he's getting plenty to eat.  If he goes more than four hours during the day without asking to eat, I'd probably at least give him a chance to eat, but otherwise, I think I'd just go with it.  Just to be sure he is in fact gaining weight at a good rate, you could ask your pediatrician's office if you can bring him in just to check his weight in a couple of weeks.  (I'm assuming he was weighed at his two month well visit and isn't scheduled to be back at the doctor until his four month visit.)

as for pp "dream child" I don't know about that! LOL! we do have reflux and milk protein intolerance, and he's still a little high maintenance otherwise, too...

we have a scale at home FWIW and will continue to weigh him! Thanks for the input!! defin. makes me feel better!
