How frequently should I be pumping to get my supply up?
Should I be working on building up a "supply" now, or am I a little premature?
I usually manage to pump about 3 oz in the morning/during the night, and then pump about an oz at night before I go to bed. During the day DD feeds frequently and long enough that I can barely keep up-we usually have to give her the 3 oz from the morning at night before she goes to sleep with a little formula (1oz) so I'm not able to build up a supply. I feel like what I do pump I end up feeding her and I'm afraid that I'll never get any into the freezer! Does anyone have advice for building up my pumping supply?
Re: Frequency of pumping?
Pump after every feeding, even if you only get 1oz that will help build your supply. My doctor said that it creates a supply and demand with your body...since you just nursed, and pump afterwards...your body thinks there is a higher demand, and will supply more milk. It might take a month or so to get supply up. But I can easily pump 4ozs in 15 minutes every 3 hours, so I'm just now starting to build a supply in the fridge..we still use it everyday though.
We also supplement with formula at night (helps him sleep better and longer)...so my night feedings are used in the morning. I rarely actually nurse anymore since my baby is a "lazy eater"...he doesn't suck long enough to fill himself up...unless it's from a bottle. I feel that at least he's getting the breastmilk, I don't mind pumping it.
