I can't find any room for a book shelf, but I also just can't imagine not having one. Books were a huge part of my childhood, and I already have tons of books for babies. Where do they go if you don't have a bookshelf?
When we were thinking of not having one I was planning to buy a cute basket to keep on the floor near the glider to house all of the books (and if space is really tight, you could probably stash the basket under the crib when needed).
We are definitely planning on having a bookshelf since we already have a collection of books for the kid. It will be a small one though. I'm not 100% sure it will fit, but we'll see. I think the basket idea is a good one, or you could stack them neatly on a dresser or other furniture.
We have a book shelf, but I have seen a lot of people use cute baskets for books. It's easier for baby to get the books out and much easier to clean up that way too!
As we speak, my 1 and 2 year olds are tearing all the books off their bookshelves. Something they do at least 2 or 3 times a day. While a bookshelf looks nice, I'd recommend shelves to hang on the wall...way, way out of their reach.
Since her closet is wide and her clothes are so short I thought about putting a book shelf at the bottom. That way it doesn't clutter up the room and we can make good use of space. When's she's older she'll be able to get to her toys, books etc and I'll be able to hide the mess easily.?
I am going to do some small shelving to display a piggy bank and pictures etc.

DH and I are both readers, I am an English teacher and one of my showers has a "Bring the baby a book" theme... I'm going to start checking into cheap WalMart and Target bookshelves because I know we will continue to buy books for her as she grows older.

You could buy a hanging one.
DH is building shelves in the nursery. Not just for books though, they'll be floor to ceiling on one wall. We needed the storage.
We are planning on focusing our childrearing on learning and reading... whatever nursery "theme" we have, it's going to be Beatrix Potter, so YES YES YES we're having a bookshelf!!
Our baby mantra is "we're marinating this baby in smart!"

LOL- this sounds familiar.. Thankfully DS is finally at the age in which he can put the books back on the shelves himself- he needed "help" for the longest time, but it's amazing now that he has to do it on his own, how his books tend to stay on the shelves!
