My nipples are screaming

I thought this was supposed to get better? Everyone I ask says I must be doing something wrong if it still hurts. LC's have told me it looks like I'm doing everything right and then hand me nipple gels and creams. I'm going crazy. I don't want to hate feeding her, but right now I do. It's miserable. They aren't cracked or bleeding anymore but they are so sensitive I can't even put her against my chest to burp her.

WTF???

Re: My nipples are screaming

  • Honestly, it took a good 8 or so weeks before it stopped hurting. Have they given you APNO? If not get some. After you put it on, cover the nipple with plastic wrap. My LC told me to do this, and it sounds crazy, but it works.

  • I never had any cracking or bleeding either this time (my youngest will be 8 weeks old in 2 days) but I can honestly say that I was in lots of pain for the first 4 weeks (and he had a good latch).  It just takes a few weeks for them to toughen up.. it will get better soon. I don't think it means anything is wrong - as long as you don't have any blisters or bleeding - pain at 2 weeks out is normal IMO.

I know that doesn't help much... it will get better.  And lanolin & all that didn't help me either since my nipples weren't torn up.

  • Mine were pretty sore for several weeks too.  In fact right now my left nipple is SO sore again, i don't know why though.  I have been using the soothies gel pads (I get them at walgreens) and they help a little.  I also find that soaking my nipple in warm water really makes it feel better for a short time.  I'm sorry you are in so much pain.  I know that feeling of dreading the feedings b/c of the pain.  Hang in there!
  • Hang in there!!!  It DOES get better.  Mine didn't get better until about 6 wks.  I would cry when I fed LO because it hurt so bad.  I had to use a nipple shield for a couple days to ease some of the pain.

  • I am so right there with you! dd has a good latch and still I wimper grit my teeth when she first latches on . Lanolin doesnt help even though I continue to put it on and everyone tells me to take a warm shower but they are so sensitive I end up standing in the shower covering my nips LOL! sorry I cant help but just wanted to let you know I feel your pain!
  • Even if you are doing everything right, if the nipples are already injured it will take some time for them to heal. Keep them as dry as you can, use lanolin, and change nursing pads frequently.
  • It took at least 6 weeks before I didn't have to curl my toes in pain anymore.  I know it isn't what you want to hear... but it will get better.
