Pumping less milk b/c shields are too big?

I was using a size L shield for pumping and it seemed too small still b/c my left nipple was getting really painful and pinched when I pumped.  So I went to BRU to buy a size XL and of course they were all out.  So I just got the sice XXL b/c that was all they had.  I could not even imagine pumping another day with the size L b/c my nipple hurt so much.  Yesterday and today I'm using the bigger ones, but it seems like I'm not getting as much milk as normal.  It usually takes me about 30 min to pump out 5 oz from each side in the morning, and currently I'v ebeen pumping 25 min and have 2 oz from each side.  Yesterday after 35 min I had only 2 oz from each side and my breasts were still very engorged.  I know having too small of a shield can cuase you to express less milk, but can having too big of one do the same thing?  I'm not sure if I shoujld just go back to the smaller one or what.

  • i would imagine that ones that are too big would prevent a proper seal and so you would pump less

ditto. That happened to me with the standard, but when I called Medela they sent me a free pair since I couldn't find my size.

  • It did seem to get a good seal.  I got 5 oz from my right boob, but lefty only gave up 3 this morning.  I guess I'll try to go to a different BRU this weekend to find the size XL to see if that works.  I'm just so frustrated with pumping right now!
