Pain in the Boss/Venting

So, my old boss was fired in April.  I ran my office nearly single handedly until the second week in June.  I am exhausted beyond all belief because my boss doesn't have even half of the knowledge base that I have.  I am constantly doing things for her and showing her how to do things over and over and over (she is also 30-something years older than I am.)  Not to mention she can't schedule people for her life.  So now when I am starting to talk about my maternity leave (my intent was to take off Sept 1st through Dec 31st over the 12 weeks I do realize) she basically told me that I would not have a job to come back to.  Talk about being under-appreciated!  Makes me totally angry beyond reason.  Anyone else having issues with their bosses or places of work?

  • That's when you remind her that if you don't come back, she's likely not to have a job either, 'cause she'll mess it all up!

Sorry to hear about your boss. I know what it feels like to deal with a jerk for a boss, as I'm doing it right now, but I'm willingly leaving my work place once my maternity leave starts.

  • I'm sorry about your boss.  I've been pretty lucky with my work; they're really supportive of me.  One thing you might want to look into is MLA.  I don't think she can legally fire you. You're entitled to 12 weeks off work (not necessarily paid though).
  • By law you can take 12 weeks of FMLA unpaid (your company should have a policy which says if you are required to use Vacation, PTO, etc or you may have STD that you can use).  The law basically secures a job for you.  Not necessarily your job but it had to be at least similar (like pay).  Talk to your HR rep about this.  You can let your HR rep know that your boss threatened your job which is illegal.

Maybe offer to work from home.  You can work intermittently from home if your doctor allows it.  You would get paid for that time.  Work out a plan to cover your work while you are out.  Then present it to your boss.  Schedule a meeting vs just stopping in so you will have time to meet uninterupted.  Create training notes so people can follow them.  Show you are still thinking of the team even though you will be out.

You should ahve already requested your leave and have had your doctor complete the FML certification paperwork.  It is not your bosses decision how long you are out but the doc (but pregnany is 12 weeks).  If not, get the paperwork from your HR rep and bring it to your doc office next appt. They can fax it back to your HR rep.
