Rubbing alcohol for fever?

Umm isnt this very old school? Someone I know said their SIL said to do this because her DD has a fever from teething. I told her not to do it. Does anyone do this anymore? Isnt it dangerous? She wants to rub it in her legs and feet?

  • A fever from teething is very low grade. If it's something like 103, that isn't teething.

It's not necessarily dangerous, but the smell used to make my brother barf.

A tepid bath would work better.

  • from babycenter:

Never try to reduce a fever by sponging down your baby with rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol can be absorbed into your baby's bloodstream through the skin. It can also cool him too quickly, which can actually raise his temperature.

  • Plus, that's totally overkill!  Give the baby some infant motrin, the pain and fever will subside!
