Help! Need opinions on this MAILBOX (seriously)

(Also posted on Decorating Board):

What is your opinion on handpainted mailboxes? I would not buy one if we lived in your typical suburban house, but we live in a downtown area with lots of Victorian houses, flowers and woods. Our house is not Victorian, but it is in a very picturesque area....lots of trees, hills, etc. Our house is "light and airy" feeling...sometimes I even think it feels gardeny if that makes sense (lots of light, soft colors, lots of french doors, etc).

Anyway, I was in Home Goods yesterday and saw this mailbox for $15. I looked online and similiar mailboxes sell for $100 each. We do need a new mailbox. I bought it, but I can take it back if I change my mind.

I can't decide if the mailbox would look pretty and nice in our setting and on our house (I think it would), or if handpainted mailboxes are cheesy or tacky. This is NOT the one we have, but it is similar to this (although ourse is green, not white). What do you think?

  • I really do not like hand painted mailboxes. While 15 beans is a great deal- I'd pass on it.

    Jamaica,

See, I normally don't think I'd like them either, but sometimes things I don't normally like look nice in certain settings. I thought this might be one of them, but I have not convinced myself yet ;) The price was so good, I decided to buy it and ask around first. I don't want it to ruin the look of our house if it is cheesy though!

  • Loading the player...
  • Try it out and live with it for a few days/ weeks. For 15 bucks it can't hurt!

At least it's not a hand painted cat one :o)

What!? What a great idea! I think I will try to handpaint some cats on there..that will be AWESOME!

Seriously though, I just decided that even if I don't use it, I am going to keep the mailbox on a shelf in our laundry room (it matches the laundry room color-wise) and just stick mail in there instead of leaving it laying out all the time like I tend to do!

  • It would look great....at my grandma's house.  :)

this...my grandma has something similar, so does the old lady down the street from me.

show me a picture of a setting you think it would be cute in and maybe I'll retract my statements, but I REALLY cannot picture it.....

  • I don't like it much.

And, why get something nice when the snow plow is just going to wreck it anyway? LOL

And unless it's been sealed somehow, it'll just scrape off.

  • My first thought was, 'uh, no', but after I read your full post I'm not sure. Are there other mailboxes like that in your neighborhood? It's going to be hard for any of us to imagine what it would look like without knowing the area.

    this!

Our mailbox gets knocked down all the time. It's so annyoing.

  • not a fan, but for $15 you could always paint it a solid color if you didn't like it.
  • You live in Northville, right?  That would totally fit in in the subdivisions around there and not look hokey at all!
