Dairy Other Than Milk at 12 Months?

What other forms of dairy do you / did you give your 12 month olds. My girls just don't want to drink milk, they would rather eat solids. It is not that they don't like milk, they do drink it but are barely getting 12 oz. in a day, and I know they need more dairy for the calcium for their bones and teeth development. I am giving them yogart melts and yogart for part of their lunch, but need to add more dairy products and am looking for ideas.

If you have tried cheese what kind do you use, meaning type and form (string or cubed cheese). They do have 4 upper and 4 lower front teeth right now, so I am not sure what kind of cheese I can safely give them to chew and swallow.

TIA

  • At 12 months we were giving them shredded cheese of all types, and they loved it.

  • Mine love yogurt. For cheese, you can even just tear up the cheese slices you would use for sandwiches. Or you can do cheese toast, cheese ravioli, melted cheese on vegetables, or make a cheese sauce for pasta with milk, cheese, flour and butter.

  • Mine aren't 12 months yet but they love yogurt and we just started cheeses we are cutting up block cheeses for them and they are doing ok with it, Ben likes it more than Kate though right now.

    What about cottage cheese?

Calcium is found in so many foods that if baby doesn't drink milk, that's not really a bad thing.

Cheese is very good for baby and is a good source of calcium as is yogurt.

Other foods that contain calcium are tofu, broccoli, certain beans such as kidney beans, whole wheat/white bread, canned salmon etc. Just check on the labels of any foods you buy and you will be surprised to see calcium.

  • cheese and yogurt are HUUUUGE hits with our two.  Shredded cheese, cubed cheese, broken up pieces of slices, pasta with parmesan, mac and cheese, grilled cheese.  Those go-gurt things are a big treat as well.
