Cribs, where to start?

We have started looking at furniture, but like everything else baby it is overwhelming. I do have Baby Bargains and read some other things online. I know that I want a conversion bed, crib to twin, but other than that feel like there is so much out there to look at and I don't know how to narrow it all down. Anyone have any tips? Thanks!

Re: Cribs, where to start?

  • The way I did it was first decided what color crib I wanted.  Then you can  search at stores for those color cribs and write down the names of the ones you like.  Then read the baby bargains review as well as parent reviews on websites to compare.

  • It sounds like you already have an idea of what you want.  You may want to Google seach conversion cribs and see what pops up as far as websites, or look at the more popular sites that you see on this board.  Every site has a search button that helps you narrow it down by type, color, and even price range.  Don't forget to look at shipping costs because those can add lots to your total in some cases.  Some of the best sites to get started at (most will have the same brands with different prices) are:

    www.csnbaby.com

    www.simplybabyfurniture.com (free shipping)

    www.babiesrus.com

    www.target.com

    www.walmart.com

  • I'd start on the BRU web site - they have a good assortment of decently-made, mid-priced cribs and you can read other people's reviews of them.  And visit your local BRU so you can look at the cribs in their showroom.

If you're looking for bargain-priced cribs, take the same approach at Target's and WalMart's web sites and stores. USA Baby has higher-end cribs, but you'll have to visit a store (if you have one). Their web site isn't all that helpful.

If/when you find one you like, you can always further research it in Baby Bargains. Also ask for feedback here.

That's the approach we've taken. GL!

This is a good tip, but also don't forget about local baby/children furniture stores. Sometimes they have REALLY great sales and often they have the pieces in stock, so you can take them home right away. Also, if you order through them, you shouldn't have to pay for shipping.

  • I think they convert to a full (not twin)???

We got ours from Albee Baby and it came within a week!  We didn't want a converter.  I'd prefer to get a matching dresser/bed when he's a 'big boy'...that is all stuff you figure out obviously!  Cribs are very overwhelming!  GL

  • We went to the baby store and looked around. Neither of us knew what we wanted and we figured they'd have a little bit of everything there. Thankfully they had lots of pamphlets that I was able to grab and make notes in.

Grabbed 4 different pamphlets and have been able to narrow it down to 3 sets we like.

I found going into the actual store to be helpful. I tried looking online but didn't see anything I liked and found it was hard to get an idea of the true furniture color. I also wanted to be able to see the construction of the furniture in person. That helped elminate alot of cribs!

Same here!  I knew I wanted a dark color, was leaning towards a cherry finish... DH & I walked into the 1st store and both agreed right away on a black crib w/ attached changing table.  And it was only $299!

Yes, I totally agree with this -- I gave all the cribs I looked at a really good shake to see how sturdy they were. That was a BIG thing for me.

  • I thought that I'd mention that we weren't able to find any cribs that converted to twin beds.  I think that there are some out there, but we didn't have any luck, but we only looked at cribs that were espresso colored.  We ended up going with a crib that converted to a toddler/day bed and then to a full size bed.  We also bought the full-size conversion rails at the same time we ordered the crib.

After doing a lot of price comparison, we ordered ours from Cribs.com because they had free shipping and also had a $20 off coupon.

  • You ladies are right, I was thinking full size bed. I started googling some more this afternoon. I am just trying to steam-line the process. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it!
  • My crib is the Ocean by Baby's Dream. It is espresso and converts to a twin (not full). If you wanted a twin bed, you have basically already narrowed it down because most lifetime cribs are full sized. I found that going to USA Baby, sitting in a comfy chair and looking through every single book was the fastest way to compare.

Then I walked around and looked at cribs. I found out that I'm hopeless at using dropsided cribs, and I'm much too short to be lifting a heavy baby out of a fixed crib so that left me with fold down. I love my crib, even if it was expensive.

  • I would say the very first place to start would be to figure out what your budget is for the nursery furniture and decide how many pieces you want in the room. I suggest doing a dresser that doubles as a changing table, no need to have a seperate changing table. I picked a crib color first and then started looking at bedding, but ended up going with a different wood finish once I decided what bedding I wanted. The bedding didn't look right with the white crib, so we switched to a dark wood crib. I think I went back and forth on the crib decision 4 or 5 times! I agree, there is a lot out there but you have time. Good Luck!
