stars...whats up with them anyways?

So, I know there is a one star wonder that floats around only giving each post 1 star. 

What are the stars for anyways?  Do you get points (which I still dont know what the points are for) for posts with 5 stars? 

I wish they nest gods would write a manual for all of these silly things.  Points, starts, bump blocks, how many posts does it take to get to the next level etc.
