Hey bumpettes,
listen I have a personal problem..more personal than ttc apparently, so be kind..
My house smells like stinky sweaty sour sweat socks...I can not find the source of the odor. I have cleaned and vaccummed, done every piece of laundry, washed the dog beds, now I have even had the ducts cleaned. I swear there is no way I can find this odor...several questions for you:
1. do you think DH is playing a trick on me and really hid a pair of sweat socks someplace?
2. Does duct cleaning cause this smell? it has gotten worse since they were cleaned but we are also getting a new ac and furnace and there has been no air movement for two days.
3. Do you think the worker men being in my house for two days could make it smell this bad?
boy sorry to unload such a personal problem but it is driving me crazy..any suggestions are appreciated.
baze
Re: not TTC related:
Don't apologize. Just the other day I had to ask about how to get hair dye (lots of it) off skin. In a hurry.
I was asking for ...a friend.
About that odour, I am stumped! Did the worker men leave anything there?
i had a similar issue.
thought the cat was peeing somewhere so i crawled around in the dark w/ a black light. never found anything but around the same time we realized our built in humidifier (it was winter) was leaking (luckily it was dripping conveniently into the pan under the furnace) and the sitting water caused stink.
that's what i chalked it up to anyway b/c once we cleaned that up and changed the humidifier filter i didn't smell anything else.
?not sure if you'd have anywhere where there may be a leak or standing water.
have you smelled towels? an old wet washcloth that may have dried or a towel that was wet and is stinky?
the only thing i'm thinking of is something that would have contained water at some point.
is it more noticeable in one area of the house than another?
i've never had my ducts cleaned but my guess is since you smelled it prior to that, then that's not it.
can you ask dh if he's playing a trick??
good luck on locating the source, i know how frustrating a stink can be!!!?
I was thinking this, also. ??
It is a general smell..DH and I talked..no tricks being played. He smells it too but he was worried i would be upset if he said something.
Tommorrow I am taking our area rugs to the cleaners. Probably will cost more than the rugs...I am washing the dogs beds now ( just did it saturday)
The attic is a VERY SCARY place for me maybe DH needs to go check. It smells like a sweaty person has been outside..you know the smell...I am burning candles and searching...
keep the suggestions coming.
we are going with the stagnet water theory until proven wrong. We are going to have the gutters cleaned asap..since the windows have been open (no ac and no fan)...so if the gutters are filled with junk..it gets smelly..I will keep you posted.
I just proposed to DH...we need a cleaning lady then we wouldn't smell these smells. He laughed and said maybe after the bfp!!! (yep he used the letters)..YAYAYAYAYAYA!!!
Your gutter outside would not be causing the smell inside of your house. Unless of course, you have your windows open but then still I don't think so. Gutter cleaning isn't super expensive but I also don't think you really needed your vents cleaned. We did ours (pretty high cost) and I then found some article that said it's very rare that houses need it.
since none of us can smell the smell and your simply describing it...do you think your dogs have an anal gland issue? That's a pretty funky smell. Not like poop...like bad a$$ dog smell.
I'm chiming in a little late but I would go with the standing water issue somewhere in the house. Check to see if there's a drip pan underneath your refrigerator or freezer (if you have one). I think this might only be an issue if the freezer is not frost free, though. Also, HVAC units produce water through condensation and have a "trap" built in to the pipes leaving the unit. I believe that pipe drains somewhere into the ground near the HVAC unit. If the smell arrived when you stopped running the unit I bet that's where it is. Not sure how to fnd this, but if that's the problem it will probably go away once you get your HVAC unit up and running again.
Also...not sure where you live but do you have "stink bugs"...yes stink bugs. We have them around here and if you kill one the smell is awful. If I find one in the house I have to carefully catch it and flush it. I don't know how to post a picture, but here's a link to a site that has pictures.

This is quite a mystery...keep us posted and I hope you don't have to go through too much more trouble to find the cause.
I'm wondering if it might be the AC and furnace. I know when we turn on either for the first time of the year there's always an icky smell...sometime similar to what you describe; it usually only last an hour at most. I assume you are getting new ones because those are old and need replacing (not because of the smell) so maybe once you replace them the smell will go away.
I also think the dead animal in the house is a possiblity, in the attic or possibly, unfortunately, the walls (especially if you live near an open field where mice like to hang).
I don't know where you live but has it been really humid/wet outside? I wonder if that could be the cause too. Maybe once you get your rugs clean the smell will go away.
Have been leaving windows open? Is it possible that it's coming from outside (dead animal decaying) and not your house?
Ugh! So many possiblities. Sorry you are dealing with this...but I LOL'd that you thought your husband was behind it; I would think the same of mine. Sneaky devils.
