Fever 1 week after MMR Vaccine?

DS had a fever of 103 today, and now it is down to 101 after tylenol. He does not appear to be sick, besides the fever. He had his shots a week ago. DId anyone else experience this? I think the fever is high- before he would run a 99 temp the day of shots, but nothing like this. I tried calling the Dr, office is closed for today- not sure if I should do anything else right now.

Re: Fever 1 week after MMR Vaccine?

  • I think that's a normal time frame for a reaction for MMR - it happens later than with other shots. And something like 20% of kids have a reaction, so it sounds to me like that could very well be the cause. I would just do Tylenol/Motrin for now. Hope he feels better soon!

  • I agree with pp. DD just had her MMR vaccine a few hours ago and they told me that reactions to the vaccine could show up 7 to 21 days after the shot.
  • We haven't done the MMR yet but I do know that reaction time is 7-10 days after the shot so I think that's pretty normal.  I would just treat with Tylenol/Motrin and a lukewarm bath if needed.  Hope he feels better tomorrow.
  • DD had a fever of 102 5 days after the mmr shot. My mom thought this was wierd because of the time passed, but I had also read the reactions could come days after. She was kinda down and sick the rest of that weekend. Definately not herself. Which really sucked because her 1st bday party was that saturday(she had gotten the shot the monday b4) and she was still sickly through the weekend. She did well with tylenol and extra loving.

  • I think I remember DD having a mind fever 3-4 days after her MMR shots.  like the others said I think its pretty normal.

  • OP: That is exactly what happened to DD... she had a fever and was not herself for a couple of days...
