Daycare Question

Hi Ladies

I'm not sure if you get this question alot so sorry if it is repeated but I am wondering what the average daycare cost is. I know that it will be a bit different because I live in Canada but when I was looking for places for my LO to go the average price I found was $900-$1200 a month. I don't think that $800-$900 is unreasonable for daycare but I do think that $1200 is! $800 was for babies 19 months and up and for 0-19 months it was $1185-$1200 a month. Any opinions would be great.

 Thanks

Re: Daycare Question

  • I looked at about 8 daycares that ranged from $950/month to $1,350/month.  we ended up at one in between - $1,150/month.  That was for 0-18 months.
  • In my area (Philly Suburbs), it depends on the age of the child.  The minimum for full-time infants is probably $250 and for toddlers $225 per week.  To answer your question, $1200 is not unusual in my area.

Would you consider a nanny share?  Because I had twins, we opted to go for a nanny up until this point.  My DH leaves very early for work and it was easier to have someone come to our house rather than me getting them up and ready by myself.  The twins are starting daycare this fall.

  • Ours is $1200 -$1500 a month depending on the number of Fridays in the month. ($300 a week) That seemed to be the going rate around here for a baby 6 weeks to 12 months old.
  • In Atlanta, good places for infants are between $1100 and $1250 per month.  I have a friend who found a good place for about $1000 per month, and he thought that was an excellent deal.
  • There's a really wide range based on a variety of things - where you live,  if it's in someone's home or a daycare center, etc.  I pay about $1500 a month for DD and will drop slightly when she moves to the toddler room.  She's in a daycare that is located at my work.  That price is in line with the other centers that we looked at.
  • I'm in a HCOL area, but ours is $1776/mo for children up to two years old.  The required caregiver ratio for children under two is 3:1.
