My DH are looking to move out-of-state and try something different. Pretty much all of our immediate family is here so this would really be starting over for us! I used to travel cross country all the time with my parents when I was younger but obviously places are a lot different then what I remember and I have different priorities and criteria now. So if you wouldn't mind if you like where you live could you please share why you like it (or don't like it), and how family friendly it is (school districts, parks, activities, etc). We are open to just about all areas except for the southern regions. No offense to the south but we are cold weather people and need our snow! Thanks!

we're big fans of the NE. We've lived in NYS a total of 6 years (NYC for 1, gorgeous fingerlakes region for 5.). we love traveling around the NE.
I've heard wonderful things about Madison, WI and would have agreed to move there if dh had been offered a job there. Chicago is fun, we lived 2 hrs south in Champaign-Urbana... very family friendly... great parks district. great programs offered through the parks. I loved it.
I have lived in MA all my ife and like it. I am not a cold weather person, so if I could I would move somewhere warm. But if you are looking for snow, you will definetely get it here. I like MA because there is always thinsg to do with the kids. They have great museums, aquarium...those kind of things. I don't even have to go into Boston to find things for my kids to do. We have found a lot of places to take the kids outside of Boston. Plus, you have Cape Cod which I grew up vacationing at and love!
Downside of MA is that it can get expensive to live. But there are some beautiful, family friendly towns here.
My DH and I lived in the Boston area for a long time and had the opportunity to move anywhere (and work from home). We ended up in Colorado and can't be happier.
We have a house that's 1/2 the price of a place in the greater Boston area (and it was practically new). We live close to Denver and Boulder but can still get to the mountains easily. There are lots of trails right in town and a zillion things to do with kids.
And there's a ton of snow in the mountains, but not too much in town. Therefore, we get to play in it all winter, but don't have to shovel it much.
Money magazine has an awesome breakdown this month- I recommend checking it out.
Denver is nice. the suburbs are v. family friendly...even the city. Boulder is VERY VERY family friendly and nearer to the mountains if you want snow more frequently. Downtown gets VERY little snow. I shoveled 3 times this year, and that's it!
oh- very very very VERY. I don't think I got enough of those in there...
I used to live in Denver, CO and LOVED it! We will most likely end up in that area within the next few years or so. You still get some snow (just have to go to the mountains to really get the full effect) but you also get beautiful, dry hot days (very little humidity).
I didn't have kids when I lived there, so I am no help in the schools department, but I do know there are a million parks around.
We live right next to Boston. Amazing school system, incredibly family friendly, more parks than I can count, still on the T so Boston and all that it offers is easily accessible. Plus there is so much around Boston - so many easy day trips, weekend trips... Vermont, Maine, NH, Rhode Island - all fairly quick trips. It is beautiful here - I love it.
The only downside - it is expensive.
Halo79RN - we were just in Urbana last weeked
That is where DH is from!
Have you considered Pittsburgh? Salaries are high, cost of living is comparatively low, good schools, low crime & more snow than the DC area. The next G-20 Summit is being held b/c it's a town which has gone through tough times, but has rebounded.
Plus it's about a 3.5 hour drive from MD, so you could easily visit family -- if you wanted. We live in NoVA, but DH is from The Burgh & we visit his parents quiet often.
Perrysburg, OH
It was just ranked in some magazine as one of the best cities to live. I am trying to move there myself if my house ever friggin sells.
Thanks so much! We actually have Oregon, Minnosotta, Wisconsin, and Colorado on our list so it's nice to hear them listed here as well.
Pittsburgh was actually #1 on our list up until recently when we learning my DH's parents were buying a vacation house 1 hour away near Erie. One of the reasons we want to move is to get away from family so unfortunately Pittsburgh came off.
