Random thought: My gma always said that once you are 70

you are old enough to die. She took it from Psalms in the bible.

So now, when I see the obituaries, I always look at the age to see if they were old enough.

ETA: She died when she was 79

  • From the bible?  I would think that when the bible was written, the life expectancy was FAR below 70.

Random yes, but not entirely out of place since the Tao bell dog died, and it was old it made me think of that.

Now I'm intrigued to know which Psalm that comes from.  I would like to think it's not true because my dad is 68 and I'm not ready for him to go.  My grandma passed away in March at age 78 and it still felt like she was too young to go.

I don't know.  In the old testament, life spans were into the hundreds.  I forget which book lists all the ancestors with how old they were.

I wonder where she got the number 70 from.

  • Wonder what the average life expectancy was in Biblical days.  Noah and Moses were really really old (as were some others) but then I suppose some died young.  70 might have been average.  Probably for your grandma 70 was considered old.  My 'oldest" grandma lived to be 73 and we didn't that think was very old at the time (I was a teenager so it was a long time ago).  Now when people are 80 and die it seems like they weren't THAT old.

  • I have a call into my parents to find out for me. I agree that 70 is too young now. Heck my other gma just turned 87 and I'm still not ready to lose her yet.

  • Hmmm, my maternal grandma still had 20 years to live at that point, my paternal grandma lived 32 years beyond 70, so they still had a long ways to go by then.

  • "The length of our days is seventy years--or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away."  Psalm 90:10
