3rd Trimester

I'm not surprised (work vent)...

When I was 6 weeks pregnant my director had told me I could work from home after my maternity leave was over.  I have talked to him about it since then and mentioned it in passing to HR and other ranking staff members at my job.  No one has said anything, but 'Yes, that sounds great.'

I emailed HR yesterday to get the paperwork started and I am told that this isn't going to be possible after all-WTH!!!  If I hadn't started this then I never would have known, finished my maternity leave and not had any childcare ready to go. I have 9 weeks before I'm due and I haven't given daycare a second thought.  Now, I have to find and interview caregivers, figure out a budget, and come to terms with the idea of not being at home all the time.

I am just so annoyed.

  • You should be!!! They're lucky you didn't blow a freakin' gasket!

  • What was their reasoning?  Is there anyone else you can talk to about it?
  • Always get it in writing first.  I learned this the hard way too at an old job.  When I interviewed I was told I could work 2 days from home after maternity leave - before even becoming pg.  They waited until after I came back from maternity leave to tell me I couldn't do it and they had the balls to be rude to me about it.
  • I would be so upset about this.  I'm sorry you have to deal with that!  Anything else you can do?  Try talking to someone "higher up"?
  • I work for the federal government, so there really isn't any negotiating that can happen.  My director offered me the opportunity without checking with the regulations.  When I emailed HR about it the rep checked with her cheif and was given the regulation showing it couldn't happen.  I think I'm most annoyed that this isn't the first time I have been told something beneficial that didn't come to fruition.  I am committed here until December (about a week after my maternity leave is over), so now I'm just debating about when to start looking for a new job.
