So I haven't thought that much about buying a diaper bag, but I need to get one eventually so I might as well start looking. What are some essentials that I should be looking for? Lots of pockets, changing pad, wipe case? What else?

Re: What should I look for in a Diaper Bag?
Something that will fit all the stuff you want to carry along (e.g. some people don't carry a purse at the same time). Also, something that will not make you feel dumb when you carry it around (some diaper bags are really ugly)!
That last one was pretty obvious, but HTH!
I personally never used a diaper bag. I've always tried to find an inexpensive LARGE purse, with one pocket inside and an outside pocket for a bottle.
I managed to find these beautiful floral purses at KMart for ten dollars that had all of that, It fit all of my baby things inside (Diapers, wipes, blankets and clothes) Bottle on the outside and I still use it to this day.
Ebay has them too - link

IMO, the wipes case was a mote point, it never held enough wipes so we ended up getting those flip top ones and putting a whole pack in the diaper bag.
We liked to have extra clothes in addition to lots of diapers, diaper cream, most bags come with a changing pad and dirty duds bag, little trash bags in case there we were doing a change in the car or at least not a bathroom. Room for my wallet and phone, and in my case my diabetic test kit and supplies, snacks and water. As DD grew, we included those roll up placemats for dining out, crayons, sippy cups, a toy. The list could never end. I like darker color cloth bags or ones that wipe clean easily it's amasing how quickly they get dirty.
