How do you freeze your BM?

I've been purchasing the Medela and Lansinoh freezer bags, but then I read that you can use just regular ziplock bags.  I was just wondering if anyone has use the ziplock bags and it works for you.  I guess it's just as good as the others, but just curious if anyone on the board has done that before.  TIA!

Re: How do you freeze your BM?

  • Only use bags that are made for storing breastmilk!  Ziploc bags will break much, much easier than the Lansinoh bags.  Also, they are not sterile like Lansinoh & Medela bags are.

ETA: I used Lansinoh bags the whole time.  I had some Medela bags, but the Lansinoh ones seemed easier to use.

  • I wouldn't be comfortable with it. I think the Medela bags have double thick plastic and then the double zipper. I don't think the milk would spoil, but it may not be as fresh.

  • I've read that Ziplock bags weren't good to use... hmm I'm curious to hear others responses, seems Ziplock bags would be cheaper.
  • I asked my lactation consultant the same thing.  Her response was that ziplock bags are not sterile like the other bags.  The other bags are also lined so that the nutrients in the milk don't get stuck to the sides.  So basically she said stick with the ones that are made for breastmilk.  I personally liked the lansinoh bags better than the Medela.
  • I was using the Medela ones first and then noticed that the Lanisoh ones are cheaper so I bought those instead and I actually like the Lanisoh ones better too.

I think I'll stick to using the bags made for BM.  I was just curious what everyone else did.

  • Personally, I am reusing my lansinoh bags to store my breastmilk after they have been cleaned.  I use dish soap and our bottle brush to clean them out and hang them on our drying rack to dry.  I suppose they are not as super sterile as they are when I first open them.  But I'm fine with that.

Considering my kid has his fist jammed in his mouth most of the day and who knows what germs may be on his hand.  I'm fine with a few extra germs getting in him from our reused milk bags.  Those suckers are just too expensive for one time use, not to mention the environmental impact.  Just my two cents though...
