I should preface this by saying that after researching cytotec I was terrified of using it. I discussed my fears with my doctor and felt reassured and comfortable with using it. There are lots of scary stories out there, so if you're worried about anything regarding your labor/delivery discuss it with your doctor and come up with resolution that you are both comfortable with.
I went in on Friday July 10th, early morning 1am. They hooked me up to all kinds of monitors and gave me a low dose of cytotec to help ripen the cervix. I had a horrible time sleeping due to the monitors (should have gotten a sleeping pill in retrospect.)
Nothing happened for the first few hours and I was given another dose at 8:30 the next morning. Still nothing .... so they gave me another dose around 1:30pm. Arond 3pm I started having some contractions and I was dilated to 2cm. My doctor broke my water and the contractions came on a lot stronger. I continued to leak for hours, it was mortifying! I sat on the edge of the bed since that helped the contractions feel better and I gushed water every few minutes on the floor ... felt like I was peeing my pants over and over again. The nurse put a mat on the floor and at that point I figured I may as well forget any dignity I might have had before!
By 7pm, the contractions were very strong and they were going to give me pitocin so I asked for an epidural. MH was angry because no one checked me and he felt that my contractions were really strong and close together (we were watching on the monitor) and that maybe they didn't need to give me pitocin at all since the cytotec seemed to have done the trick. They were really busy at the hospital so were neglected for a few hours...
I was feeling good and even napped a little until about 10:30 after the epidural (which was awesome, but super weird) when I felt an extreme need to push and a lot of pressure on my bladder. I was very uncomfortable. My doc checked my and I was fully dilated. They gave me another dose of the epidural and I started pushing at 11:30 (not sure why I had a wait an hour ... though) I pushed for a little over an hour and pooped several times (like I said, no dignity in childbirth) and Nora Brooks was born at 12:45 am July 11. She was 7 lbs 15 oz and 20 3/4 inches long!
It was all in all pretty good I thought! Embarrassing with the water and the pooping, but at the end of the day I didn't care and neither did anyone else!
