What type of IUI does an ob/gyn do?

My husband teaches tennis to an ob/gyn and he's told him our situation.  The doctor says he can do an IUI for us which would only cost $400 or something.  I am wondering what this would entail.  Obviously no drugs (unless clomid) but no monitoring?  I'm confused.  Of course, DH wants to do it because it is so cheap.  I am wondering if it would just be a big waste of time, or if I should just do it to appease DH and get him to realize we need to move on to real IUI/IVF.  Anyway I was under the impression that only RE's do these procedures.  This guy is a reputable doctor, btw.

  • I would ask what type of monitoring you will recieve and if none, you REALLY need to have it done.  Cheap is not always good, no monitoring with clomid could result in HOM and then in the end that cheap option won't turn out so cheap.

For $800 with my RE I got 3-4 u/s and blood work, the IUI and a beta test. Well worth the additional  $400 IMO

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • my ob/gyn does IUIs in his office.    he did my first one, and it was exactly the same as when my RE's office does them (heck, the NURSES at my RE's office do the IUIs).

but I would ask him to clarify what is covered in that $400.   my guess is that it is only the IUI.    and if you're doing clomid, you definitely NEED to be monitored, so find out if/how he does that and what it will cost.    if you aren't using clomid... i would still recommend at least 1-2 mid-cycle monitoring appointments so that you can accurately time the IUI.

    Because we're fancy like that.

  • I would think it would be a Clomid IUI cycle. I'd ask about the monitoring you would get. If it seems like you'll be monitored well, and your dh really wants to give it a try, I don't see how it could hurt. GL!

  • We will be doing an IUI with my gyn (long story having to do with insurance). Clomid, TI, & monitoring will all be involved.   If you are OOP, the gyn may be able to code some of the monitoring so you can get coverage for some of the treatment.  I don't think it would hurt to give it a shot.

  • My ob/gyn did my IUI this cycle.  The way it is charged could be the difference.  I know that my IUI itself was only $250ish and then the monitoring and all of that is billed seperately depending on how many times I've had to go in.  I guess kinda an a la carte menu so to say.  I would ask what that all covered exactly, but I personally see no reason not to go with it.  Especially if it is going to save you money oop.  I don't think that cheaper is always better as a pp mentioned, but in this case I would look further into it.  Good Luck!

A natural cycle (no medication or u/s - just based of OPK surge) IUI is about $350 with my RE
