Gardening and Cat Poop

My BFF is a vet and told me that the second most common cause of getting that sickness from cat poop (after owning one and being exposed) is just working in your garden.

We had the ground tilled 2 weeks ago and since then the neighborhood cats think it is the best litter box ever.

I love my garden. I wear gloves and wash my hands. It is still freaking me out. Any tricks for keeping cats out of my nice tilled soil (besides leaving my dog locked in the garden all night)?

Re: Gardening and Cat Poop

  • there are repellants sold at your local hardware stores...home depot, fleet farm, etc....take a look there or give them a call to see if they have anything to keep cats away...mention that you have a dog too though because many of those products also repel dogs...GL

  • Although I agree that the danger of the disease caused by cat poop is real... it is very rare that you will contract it. Especially if you wear gloves, wash your hands/arms well after going near it, etc.

I've been cleaning my kitten's litter box for the three months or so that we've had her... and I make sure to clean myself well after each time... and no problems.

  • What kind of garden is it? Just flowers? If so, I really wouldn't be TOO worried about it. But if it's veggies or something edible, I prob wouldn't be eating whatever is growing in the garden. Just try not to wipe your face with the gloves and things like that. Maybe wash your face if you think you did touch your face too.

I am not a cat person so this holds some sick appeal to me....

    I wouldn't though.

I believe there is some truth to this.  Dead cats do not poop.  Big Smile

  • My grandfather used to use cayenne pepper to keep the cats out of his garden. I dunno how well it worked but you could try it.
