At ours the nurse measured DD laying down on the table. I asked the pedi about it later, and she said that the kids somehow stretch a bit more to their full height when laying down. It's tough to get a 3yo to stand up perfectly straight.
The reason I ask is that DD was 41 1/2" measured lying down. At the county fair, she was about 40 1/2" standing up next to the height board. Just wondering if that's a normal difference or if their board might not be completely accurate or what. As a side note, DD and our friends' 3yo son were both let on the kids version of the giant drop alone because they were close enough to the 42" requirement. Makes me wonder how accurate their measurements are...
I'll even include a clicky poll for those who don't want to take the time to type a response.

Re: 3yo+ doctor's visit - how did they measure DC?
They measured G standing up and I definitely think she slouched a little (reaction to the bar touching the top of her head) and made her measure a little shorter.
I also think the things at fairs/carnivals are approximate.
They started measuring him standing up at his 2 year appt.
He was measured at 38 inches lying down at home, but was 37 inches standing at the dr office.
