Vacation driving MD to VT....need ideas... (NE bumpies!)

We are taking a newborn and a 4 year old up to Smuggler's Notch which has a great family resort (www.smuggs.com) in August.  Because the drive is around 9 hours plus and with the kiddies is much longer.... we are looking to break up the drive and stop for the day on the way up and back (different places).  We will probably drive up 95 thru NYC and then route 91 which takes us to Connecticut and north to vermont.  Anyone know of any kid friendly places to stop???  Anything a 4 year old might really enjoy???   I am not opposed to going a little out of the way for something special.

Thanks for any ideas.

  • I live in VT so I don't know of any great places to stop along the way, but I have to commend you for taking a toddler and a newborn on a roadtrip! Smuggs is a lot of fun, hopefully the VT weather will rebound by the time you come- we haven't really had a summer because of all the rain! UGh! GL on your trip!

  • We just drove to Smugglers Notch from VA to VT for my sisters wedding. She was married at the base of the mountain. We did 6 hours each day, but only stopped for food and bathroom breaks. Neither DH or I like being in the car very much, and we just wanted to get the drive over with, so I can't help you out with pitstop ideas!  Things that were helpful were snacks, toys, and the DVD players.  I drove and MH entertained the kids.  Smuggs is beautiful, but like vtgirl said, the weather wasn't all that great. Quite a bit of rain and cool temps- we never even used the pool when we were there and only made it to the beach once.  VT is absolutely beautiful though and I'm sure you'll have a great trip.

  • Oh, we did take the Palisades Parkway through NYC., that was a little detour, but it was lovely. We avoided the George Washington Bridge and some bad traffic that way.
