feeding and sleep help

So DD was doing great with sleep. Usually sleeping from 8-9pm to 3-4am. She did this for about 4 weeks straight. Then last Thursday, she suddenly woke up at 1am and then again at 5am to feed and she's been in that pattern ever since. She's going to bed at the same time. Any suggestions as to why the change? Is changing normal? I thought she would be sleeping more hours in a row, not less!!

Also, she used to sleep so soundly, but now she'll sleep soundly for about 4 hours, then that last one she's still asleep but she thrashes about and moans. Last night she went to bed around 8:30 and started waking up at 1am. We tried just giving her her soothie and that worked for about a half hour, then she started crying in her sleep (her hunger cry.) So, we fed her her bottle but she actually never woke up.

?She's also not eating her whole bottle during the first feeding, usually only about 3oz instead of 4oz. Anyway, any suggestions??

  • Sorry! That would be good info! She's almost 16 weeks.
  • O is doing the same thing!  He used to sleep from about 9 until 2 or 3 and need his pacifier back and to be rocked for a minute, then sleep until 4 or 5 and eat, then fall right back asleep.  He did this for weeks, and now in the past week he is refusing to nap, going to bed around 9 and waking at 1 crying, rocking doesn't work.  He then wakes up every half hour to hour and when we feed him he doesn't eat the whole bottle.  It has been misery so I feel your pain.  No clue why, my mom says it is the growth spurt but who knows.
  • Have you read this article on 4 month sleep?

  • Many babies go through a wakeful period at 4 mo. in which if they were STTN previously, they start waking up again (I didn't have this problem because DD wasn't yet STTN so she got up anyways).  It tends to be just a phase that will pass in a few weeks.  If she's waking up and is hungry, I would go ahead and still feed her.

For the instances where she's fussing in her sleep but not yet waking up, I'd try letting her fuss for a few minutes to see if she resettles.  Around 4 mo old, Natalie started doing this and once I left her alone, she worked out going back to sleep and then after a few nights stopped fussing in her sleep.

Keep in mind that it's not common to STTN for long periods of time until around 9 mo. old (and then, they still cry out in their sleep, etc.).  Before 9 mo., it's very common to still want to eat in the middle of the night.
