TTC After a Loss

Period before HCG level reaches zero?

Hi everyone.  I am new to posting, but not new to reading the bump boards.  I have been a lurker for a very long time.  First off, I want to say I'm sorry for everyone who has suffered through a loss.  My heart goes out to you all, and I wish you success now that you are trying again.

I placed this post on the miscarriage/pregnancy loss board, but I though maybe a lot of women there might not know the answer if they are just starting to go through their loss.  I thought here might be a good place to post my question, also.

I was given cytotec pills on June 22 to cause a miscarriage of my 8 week along pregnancy where the baby had no heartbeat.  The bleeding from the miscarriage lasted a couple of weeks and that had been over until a few days ago.

The doctors have been monitoring my HCG levels, and they initially went down a lot, but have really slowed in the last couple of weeks.  On Friday, July 10 my level was 135 and this past Friday my level was 27.  I started bleeding on Friday a small amount, and the doctor said that since my HCG level is going down the bleeding is not a concern, but she could not say whether it was my period.

Since Saturday morning I have been bleeding a lot... more than a normal period for me, but it is very period like.  So, to get to my question, has anyone here gotten their period before their HCG level reached zero?  I thought that the level had to get to zero, then your cycle starts back up and you ovulate, and then you will get a period.  This is what I have been reading online is supposed to happen.

Thank you all very much for reading this long and drawn out post.

  • First of all, I'm sorry for your loss.  I had a natural miscarriage, so in many ways, I had a similar experience.  I monitored my betas weekly since I continued to bleed until they reached zero.  I think in the beginning of September, I had about 3 days in a row where I stopped bleeding but then I started back up again.  My beta was 6 at that time.  My guess is that last session of bleeding got rid of whatever remained that kept the betas detectable.  I finally stopped bleeding a few day later, at which time my beta was zero and I *think* I ovulated (I had EWCM and AF came 2 weeks later).  My thinking is the bleeding you're having now should get rid of whatever remains and you should probably ovulate in a week or so.  Are you getting another beta drawn?  I would think it would be about zero when you stop bleeding this time and you can get back on track.  Good luck!

  • Im so sorry for you loss.  I had a D&C in november, and bleed for two weeks and then spotted for a week.  I had my levels monitored until they hit zero.  I got my period 28 days after my surgery, and my levels were still about a 75.  From what my doctor said low doses of HGC can act as a follie stimulant causing ovulation- which would cause the rest of a normal cycle as well, and then your period.  Good luck, I hope this is your period so you can get a fresh start.  ((BIH HUGS))

  • Thank you both so much for your answers.  I guess this must be my period, then, because I can't imagine what else it could be.  Best of luck to everyone and I hope your healthy babies are conceived soon.
  • I just happened to get an HCG drawn the day I got 1st AF post D&C and it was still 11, surprisingly. Im pretty sure I O'd that month too. It was 41 days post D&C. Then 2 weeks later it was 2.6 and I got AF on day 27 that month. HTH.
