I think I tore a rotator cuff

I'm really not sure.. certainly not a doctor, but I am in a bit of pain today.  It's embarassing, really.  Yesterday I was on my way out of the house and when I opened the front door I noticed a bee was on its way in.  I tried to quickly shut the door so it couldn't get in, but I must have spazzed out and shut the door in a VERY weird way.  I definitely heard something rip in my arm followed by a burning pain.  I was home alone and didn't know what to do, but within 2 or 3 minutes the pain subsided (just some soreness) so I went on my way.

Of course this morning my whole arm hurts like a biotch.  I can still use my arm, it's just really sore.  Will this thing heal itself over time?  It's not like I can get an x-ray, right?

When MH wakes up I will talk to him too, maybe I should see a dr anyway..

Re: I think I tore a rotator cuff

  • X-ray won't show a torn rotator cuff. Can you still lift your arm above your head? It usually takes a lot more than that in someone young to actually tear a rotator cuff. It sounds more like you probably just pulled a muscle. It it continues to give you extreme pain or you can not lift it above shoulder height for a few days, I would go just have it checked out. I do have a doctorate in physical therapy - just so you don't think I'm some random wacko trying to give you wrong information. Hope it feels better soon! You're gonna need that arm to carry LO!

  • Just a thought--be very careful with it while it's healing.  I've known a couple of people with shoulder injuries (including DH and my mom who tore her rotator cuff and ended up having to have surgery) who did too much before their shoulder was completely healed and ended up injuring it worse.  My mom slipped and caught herself with her injured arm and did a lot of damage to it.  Just be very careful with it and don't be afraid to make DH do anything that requires that arm.  Better to let it heal now, than to re-injure it and deal with more problems after LO arrives.
  • I slept on my arm weird one night and woke up felling like my arm was being ripped off, all I could do was sob. My husband wanted to take me to the ER, but I knew that there wasn't a whole lot they could do with me pregnant, so I called my friend who is a massage therapist and a homeopath, and asked her what she thought I did. She said that I might have inflamed the nerve to the rotator cuff, and the nerve runs along the back of the shoulder joint but you feel the pain in the front, So ice it in the back over the ball joint and take some Tylenol. It took about an hour for the ice to work, but after I did it was all better. I haven't had any problems with it since then.

  • Don't raise your arm above your head of out to your sides.  Take tylenol and don't over use it.  It will take about 2 weeks to feel better.

I just hurt mine 3 weeks ago.
