Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

Infant ER?

So a friend of mine has a baby that's almost 2 months old and he recently had a fever of 101.6. She called her after hours nurse line and they told her to go to the ER. Long story short, he ended up having a spinal tap when all he had was a very common non-threatening virus that they could have tested him for, but didn't until AFTER the spinal tap. She is under the impression that this happened b/c the ER they went to doesn't see a lot of babies and maybe they didn't have the experience. So that got me thinking....if I needed an ER for my DS, is there one that specializes in children in the area? I'm guessing Children's Hospital has an ER, but I'm not sure. Anyone know?

Re: Infant ER?

  • You might call your pedi and see if there's one that they recommend.  We recently ended up at Acute Kids Urgent Care in Plano on a Sunday night.  We called the after-hours pedi line and the on-call pedi told us to go there before going to the ER, and we had a great experience.  The nurses were spectacular and the dr was great.
  • Children's does have an ER. I know there are pediatric urgent care places too (like care now). I tried to take DS to Care Now once when he was under 6 months old and they wouldn't see him.

  • I think mine does recommend Acute Kids.

  • I've used Acute Kids several times at the Frisco location and have always had a good experience. I didn't realize there was one in Plano. That might be closer. There's also the fairly new Children's Medical Center at Legacy in Plano that I've heard really good things about.

  • Ditto on the Acute Kids. My pedi recommends Acute Kids or Childrens Hospital.
  • Children's Medical has an ER.  I don't know where in the Dallas area you are, but Presby Plano has a great ER and they have on-call Pedis.  That's where I would take my son's before Children's opened here in Plano.

  • FYI if a child under 8 weeks old has a fever/gets sick they HAVE to do a spinal tap.  I don't remember the reasoning behind it, but my step-mom was a pediatric nurse and when ike was born she told me that.
  • It wasn't the ER. Because of the baby's age, they had to do a spinal tap. We go to Pediatrics After Hours at preston and Royal for minor emergencies and if needed, we would go to Children's Plano.
  • I have never heard of having to do a spinal tap for a fever under 102. That's news to me.
