with older babies. Do you have bed rails or something? Go to bed when they do? J would roll right off the bed if I put him to sleep in our room. He's a wild sleeper and often sits or stands while changing positions.
I'm in the process of trying to figure out something since he's getting wigglier.
Right now we have the co-sleeper on one side of the bed - he sleeps between me and it (and sometimes in it). The best thing to do is to put the mattress on the floor, which we may go to soon. I figure once he starts crawling, bed rails won't stop him.
With Evan we used a bedrail on one side and the other side of the bed was shoved up against the wall. We also taught him as early as possible, how to back himself off the bed when he wanted to get down off the bed. Our mattresses are off the bedframe, so even if he did happen to fall over the edge, it wasn't a big drop.
With Abby, we don't use bedrails. She sleeps in the middle.
As for when do we go to bed - Evan would sleep by himself by about a year old, and Abby already will. But in the evenings, once Abby is in bed and I've tidied up or wahtever I need to do, I'll just grab my laptop and sit in bed til I'm ready to go to sleep too. Or just turn on the monitor and hang out downstairs in the living room or whatever. Neither of them care if I'm not in the bed now.
ETA: I also wanted to say that both of my kids seemed to have a good sense of where the edge of the bed was, from pretty early on. Same as how adults don't just roll off the bed every night. Even when you're sleeping you still have a sense of what's around you. Sometimes if it's just me and Abby in the bed, she'll roll over and get close to the edge and kind of stop and move back to the middle. Evan did the same thing. I think when kids are used to sleeping in any particular environment, they just adapt to it and get used to it.
When my LO rolled off the bed I started putting her in her p-i-p at first. When she woke to eat she co-sleeps. Usually between DH and me, but otherwise when I am alone I push the bed to the wall and put a body pillow in the crack. This seems to work for now...our LO is a wild sleeper as well...I cant count how many times she punches and kicks DH and me.
We were putting K in her swing until we went to bed; now we have her crib mattress on her floor, surrounded by pillows and the actual crib, so that's where she sleeps the first part of the night (until we go to sleep or one of us will lay on the floor until she wakes up). We're doing this so we can make the transition to her crib as smooth as possible. When she's in our bed, she sleeps between us and pretty much stays in one place all night.
after her first waking, she comes into bed between us, so no rolling off. she's not yet a wild sleeper. i'm definitely getting closer to wanting her out of our bed though
With my older 2, they slept in bed by themselves until we came to bed. I sometimes put the third in the pack and play and sometimes in bed. We have bedrails. Mine aren't movers when they're asleep, though.
