npr: where do you buy your ladscaping plants/flowers? and landscaping suggestions

we have plenty of green in our yard and I want some spring/summer/fall color, preferably something that I don't have to plant every year. I live in MI. what do you recommend?  I'm clueless about landscaping, what do I need to plant flowers, I know a shovel and something to cut through the weed barrier but do I need soil and other stuff too or is what comes with the flower enough?

  • I use miracle grow potting soil and top soil mixture for our plants and bushes. If we are planting trees or bigger bushes, I use a root stabilizer mixed with water in the hole that I have dug (just to give it a head start). We have very rocky soil though, so we need the extra if we want the plant to live. I also put mulch down once it is planted to keep the moisture from escaping. Watering a lot is essential when planting new trees and bushes.
  • Hostas and hydrangeas are good in the climate. I also have black eye susans.
