TTC after 35

Update...retrieval now set for Monday

Went to my monitoring appointment this morning.  3 follies look good, but one is still not quite there, so they told me to continue taking my Lupron and drop my follistim down to 100 (I've apparently been at the highest dose of 250 in the am and 200 in the pm). I go back in tomorrow morning and then trigger will be tomorrow night; retrieval on Monday.

My RE said there's no way to know how this cycle will work...they usually convert to an IUI when there are less than 3, so I'm right on the cusp.  He said that he's had cases where they only got one egg and it worked and he's had cases where they had 20 and none of them worked.  But, he said that I'm at the highest dose now, so if this doesn't work, he doesn't think that there's another stimulated protocol that will work for me.

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude and just focus on getting one good egg.  There's not much that I can do beyond that, right?  And, I can't think about the "next time" until we get through this time.

One of the things that's keeping me from jumping off a cliff is that my clinic has another non-stimulated protocol that I can do if this doesn't work. They call it "Natural IVF"  Basically, they monitor you just like an IVF cycle, but you don't take any drugs except the trigger shot.  Then, they take the one egg that your body produces, mix it up with the boys and then do the transplant.  It has a lower success rate because there are fewer eggs, but they've had success with it in women like me who are late 30s/early 40s (I'm 38) and poor responders.

But, I digre

  • Good luck. I have a few questions though: do you know why your RE has you on that protocol? Is there a reason they're only giving you follistim and not adding on another drug like Menopur or Repronex to help get more follies?

I have a DD through IVF and with her I did follistim and menopur and got 5 good follies and transferred 2 great ones at 5 days. This go around I'm on the same meds but they're upping the dosage due to my age. I'm just wondering why your dr. isn't taking a more aggressive approach.

  • I hope you get more follies or that it all works out with a BFP one way or the other!

That Natural IVF is interesting. Thanks for sharing that info.

  • GL on Monday. It only takes one :)

We will look forward to hearing how it went.

Good luck, DMD. I know its tough being on the cusp. It's great that your facility does the Natural IVF. Also, my RE said that every cycle is different, even with the same protocol. Some months our bodies stim and respond better than others.
